About This Event

April 15 is around the corner and if you want a break from taxes, join us for your choice of a “short form” 10 mile or a “long form” 40 mile bike tour. Or if you really want to make it L-O-N-G, we have the option of riding the 10 mile route after finishing the 40. Both start from the same location. We roll at 8:30 am. These are relaxed no drop tours with multiple stops to regroup.

We are calling this a “tour” rather than a ride because of the many stops and easy 8 -12 mph pace. Both routes start from the LA Zoo where there is plenty of free parking. (Helpful in offsetting gas prices and taxes - see first photo below)

The 10 mile studio tour goes into Burbank and pass along Warner Bros, Disney, ABC, Disney Animation (the site of the originally planned Disneyland, Disney Imagineering Campus and DreamWorks. There will not be any celebrity sightings and we won’t be able to actually enter the studio lots but be on the lookout for hidden Mickeys and see if you can spot the iconic DrewamWorks logo on their gigantic lot. The 10 mile tour should be completed by 10:00 am or sooner.

The 40 mile route travels through Glendale, Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre, San Marino, South Pasadena, Highland Park, Montecito Heights, Cypress Park Elysian Valley and back to Griffith Park. We will take 3 different bike paths, cross two rivers and see everything from urban campsites to multi million-dollar mansions. There will be some spectacular scenery and hidden gems/easter eggs along the route and we will point them out where we can. From the tech of NASA to migrating birds and a replica of Lincoln’s childhood home, there will be plenty of sights, sounds and smells that will make this a memorable tour.

The 40 with optional 10 gives you a half century and subsequent bragging rights. Why try a half century? That is the gateway to longer and more challenging rides. If you can do 50 miles, you can do 75. If you can do 75, a full century is not that much more. Once you completed a few centuries, you might want to participate in the LA Wheelmen’s Grand Tour. That's 200 miles in one day.

The LA Wheelmen http://www.lawheelmen.org/newcomer-rides is not only for beginners but also for those interested in expanding their horizons in terms of routes, learning to ride in groups, or just getting to know bike-friendly LA routes.
