About This Event
This week's hike will be a "leisurely" 8-10 mile trek on a streamside trail, through oak and sycamore woodlands, and chaparral-covered slopes in Malibu Creek State Park in search of the Mendenhall Oak
Until the fire of October 9, 1982, the Mendenhall Oak was a magnificent spreading live oak tree. Reportedly 700 years old, it was already ancient when the Spanish expeditions first came. When stagecoaches ran between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles it provided a shady rest stop on the line. Although the tree burned and collapsed in 1982, new growth and regeneration should provide us a clue to its resting place.
Along the way we will swing by Century Lake, the Old Cabin Site and the MASH site.
We will meet at the Grasslands Trail head on south side of Mullholland Hwy about 0.1 mile west of Las Virgenes Rd. There is plenty of roadside parking on Mulholland
From the 101 Fwy: Exit Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon. Turn south toward the beach 3.3 miles then turn right on Mullholland Hwy and park about 0.1 miles up the road.
From PCH: Turn north on Malibu Canyon for 4.6 miles then turn left onto Mulholland Hwy and park about 0.1 miles up the road.
