About This Event
Corral Canyon Park in Malibu encompasses the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. The 2.5 mile loop trail climbs through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide and provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. It then descends onto an ancient marine terrace with native bunch grasses. There is a 500' elevation gain -- fit beginners ok.
Exploratory: I am in search of a way to connect Corral Canyon with Mesa Peak Motorway via Puerco Canyon. Examination of aerial photographs suggests that this is possible. But with intervening development, especially the James Cameron estate (which just went on the market for $25 mil), you never know. This may add up to 2 more miles and a few more hundred feet of elevatoin.
If successful then we will have a trail and a future hike that will go from Las Virgenes & Piuma (Backbone trailhead at Mesa Peak Motorway) to the beach. If unsuccessful we quickly retrun to Corral Canyon trail and maybe do the loop again in opposite direction.
Corral Canyon Trailhead is located at 25623 Pacific Coast Highway (https://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF-8&q=25623+Pacific+Coast+Highway,+malibu&om=1&ll=34.044552,-118.73354&spn=0.101132,0.159645&z=13&iwloc=addr) between Malibu Canyon Road and Kanan Dume Road in the City of Malibu. The Trailhead is on the north side of Pacific Coast Highway adjacent to Malibu Seafood Fresh Fish Market and Patio Cafe (https://www.malibuseafood.com/) where we can have lunch
Parking in the Corral Canyon Park lot is $3.00. I believe there is some free parking on PCH, but don't count on my memory.
Bring some money for lunch (https://www.malibuseafood.com/menu.htm) also. The restaraunt allows you to bring your own beverages, including wine and beer.
