DESCRIPTION:Our hike will consist of traveling along the lessor used trails connecting the underbelly of Las Virgenes and Cheseboro Canyons. This may include traveling on overgrown and unmaintained trails.\\n\\n\\n\\nThe star of this hike is Mt Basura\, known for its year-round snow-less skiing\\n\\n\\n\\nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/c/3/2/highres_445455410.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nWe will also visit the home of Lucas and Mark McCain.\\n\\n\\n\\nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/1/6/1/highres_445437697.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nDue to the serendipitous nature of this hike a smaller group is most desirable\, hence a wait list (no waiting for VIPs).\\n\\n\\n\\nHere is the easy part:\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/2/4/e/600_432329262.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nCheeseboro Canyon is located in the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It is from these hills that water in the canyons flow to the Pacific. The Chumash Indians lived in these canyons for thousands of years. Many trails within the canyons were original Chumash trails before they were expanded by cattle ranchers. In this large expanse of habitat\, deer\, bobcats\, coyotes and rabbits roam.\\n\\n\\n\\nThis photo of a bobcat was taken in Cheeseboro Canyon 12/31/2010 by Jared Hughey\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/2/5/f/600_432329279.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nToday\, a great diversity of plants and animals live in the canyons. Wide-spread oaks and outcrops of sedimentary rock provide excellent nesting sites for owls\, hawks and other raptors. The abundance of raptors indicates a large prey population\, especially small mammals and reptiles. In more rugged areas where cattle didn't graze\, we can still find a variety of native plant communities\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub and riparian woodlands.\\n\\n\\n\\nBreak time\\n\\n\\n\\nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/e/b/5/highres_445437013.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nA couple of unique facts regarding these canyons:\\n\\n\\n\\n• Cheeseboro Canyon has the largest concentrations of birds of prey nesting areas in the U.S. outside of Alaska.\\n\\n\\n\\n• The Valley Oak tree\, the largest oak native to the United States and possibly the world\, live in these canyons in what might be the largest southerly stand of trees left.\\n\\n\\n\\nHike will be approximately 8 miles with 1200' elevation gain. Some trails are unmaintained. Exact route will be determined as we go. Expect the unexpected.\\n\\n\\n\\nPost Hike Lunch\\n\\n\\n\\nLa Paz Restaurant\\n4505 Las Virgenes Rd.\\nCalabasas\, CA 91302\\n\\n\\n\\nDirections to Trailhead\\n\\n\\n\\nTo get to trailhead take 101 and exit Las Virgenes Rd. Turn north (away from beach) to end of road. If you are coming up from PCH\, drive up Malibu Canyon to the end (Malibu Cyn changes its name to Las Virgenes Rd). Park on the street.
