DESCRIPTION:For National Trails Day I am introducing a brand new hike! (That's right\, I have a new secret trail)....and its going to be a nice and strenuous one. Some of you are already familiar with the classic Upper Zuma hike to Buzzards Roost from the Backbone trail head at Kanan Dume Rd. This has been an out and back hike....until now....\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/7/e/0/highres_13019360.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nWhat is National Trails Day®?\\n\\n\\n\\nNational Trails Day® is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan's President's Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987\, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes\, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation\, dubbed Trails for All Americans\, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993. National Trails Day is always the first Saturday in June.\\n\\n\\n\\nWe will begin by hiking northwest from Kanan on the Backbone Trail to the Zuma Ridge Trail. The winding trail leads to a view of Newton Falls and Upper Zuma Falls\, which are especially grand after the winter rains.\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/b/c/highres_13018300.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nWe will then turn south along Zuma Ridge to Buzzards Roost where we will rest\, eat and take in ocean views.\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/c/5/f/highres_13016415.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nAfter passing Buzzards Roost we will continue on Zuma Ridge until we come to an equestrian trail and descend down into Zuma Canyon. Maybe there will be water in the creek\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/9/6/9/highres_28611561.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nAfter a short break and crossing the creek we'll head up my secret trail to the eastern ridge of Zuma Canyon and snake our way up and to the north back toward the cars closing the loop.\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/3/9/8/highres_322250072.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nHike is strenuous at about 11 miles with almost 3\,000 ft total ascent. We'll go at an easy pace\\n\\n\\n\\nBring at least 2qts water\, lunch/snacks\, hiking shoes\\n\\n\\n\\nDirections\\n\\n\\n\\nThe trailhead parking lot is on Kanan\, north side ot T1\\n\\n\\n\\nFrom the Ventura Freeway 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 7.8 miles to just before the "third tunnel" (T1). The parking lot is on the right (west side of what is now Kanan-Dume Road) and easy to spot.\\n\\n\\n\\nFrom Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4.3 miles\, just through the "first tunnel\," and make a left turn into the parking lot on the west side of Kanan Dume.\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://www.nationaltrailsday.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/NTD_2013_copyright2_RGB.jpg
