DESCRIPTION:http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/3/1/8/highres_216821752.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nLocal legend has it that some of Gaspar de Portola's scouts spotted a goat atop a summit near Temescal Canyon and named it Goat Peak. More recently\, when Will Rogers was asked if he wanted the peak renamed after himself\, he replied. "No. I don't want to rob the goat of his glory."\\n\\n\\n\\nWe can grab some of that glory\, however. Although the goat's tracks are long gone there is an old hidden trail that will take us to that summit -- marked "1729" on the topo maps. One of the residents who used to hike there in the 60s claims there used to be a register at the peak until 1967 calling the peak "High Point." The trail is steep and loose in some places so wear decent hiking boots.\\n\\n\\n\\nStarting from the top of Chautauqua\, we'll head north along the eastern ridge of Temescal Canyon to the peak. After leaving the summit we'll continue north to the Backbone Trail and Rogers Road\, take that down to Will Rogers State Park and exit the park via Rivas Canyon trail and back to Chautaqua.\\n\\n\\n\\nWe'll take our snack break at the oak tree on Rogers Road. There will also be a short stop at Inspiration Point and at Will Rogers' house (restrooms available)\\n\\n\\n\\nThere are mellow sections.....\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/b/d/8/highres_351643992.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\n....and then there are the challenging sections\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/0/8/6/highres_216953382.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nThere are spectacular ocean views.....\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/0/1/e/highres_351649182.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\n....then there are lush canyons\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/d/d/4/highres_216971732.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nHike is about 7.5 miles with 1\,800 feet total ascent (1\,200 net). No Beginners due to elevation gain and terrain.\\n\\n\\n\\nFor more photos\, check out our previous hikes\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=13861832\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=21053402\\n\\n\\n\\nDirections:\\n\\n\\n\\nCheck here to see if LA Marathon will affect your driving directions: http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/25974299/\\n\\n\\n\\nFrom Sunset\, drive to the north end of Chautauqua Blvd and park on street.
