DESCRIPTION:By special request. This will be a slow hike as we seriously explore the home of Fred Roberts and its surroundings in Solstice Canyon.\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/f/c/600_388081532.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nIn 1952\, grocer Fred Roberts and his wife Florence commissioned Paul R. Williams to design a modern home for them at their family ranch at Solstice Canyon in Malibu. Fred had begun buying land in the area in the 1930s\, eventually amassing almost 1000 acres.Their Williams' designed house\, built of stone\, brick\, and wood\, was a perfect architectural fit for the home-site of waterfalls\, springs and lush vegetation. The long\, low ranch house surrounded by pools and falling water successfully created the tropical feel the couple wanted for their retreat. The couple named their residence Tropical Terrace.\\n\\n\\n\\nSince the mansion burned in 1982\, its ruins have stood eerily in Solstice Canyon. In 1988\, the family deeded the land to the National Park Service\, and it is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the L.A. area. Some of the features that survived that fire didn't during the Corral Canyon fire of 2007.\\n\\n\\n\\nI have lots of copies of original photographs. Here is an exterior photograph. Does the layout look familiar to some of you?\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/7/7/0/600_388075152.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nA while ago I started the "Tropical Terrace Project" which juxtaposed the original photos with photos of the same spot today. Here is an example using a photo of the Roberts eating area with a view of a small trickling waterfall. Architect Williams was well-known for bringing the outside indoors.\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/9/5/0/600_388075632.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nHike will be a moderate 6 or so miles with 1000' total elevation gain. But we'll be going slow enough for fit beginners\\n\\n\\n\\nIf you are a landscape and/or architectural photographer we'll be going at a pace to promote photography. If you are a hiker\, you will also enjoy this opportunity to stop and smell the roses (Note: we will be going as fast as the slowest photographer\, within reason)\\n\\n\\n\\nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/f/a/600_388082042.jpeg\\n\\n\\n\\nDirections: From PCH\, turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. and proceed north for about 0.2 mile until you arrive at the entrance to the Solstice Canyon Park. Proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area. Corral Canyon Rd is between Malibu Canyon and Kanan-Dume Rd.
LOCATION:Solstice Canyon Park\, 3950 Solstice Canyon Rd
