About This Event

Literally step out of the Valley and into another world.

This 6.5-mile lollipop hike begins in Devils Canyon near the north end of Topanga Canyon Blvd. Devils Canyon with its spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. There are many shallow stream crossings along the way

After a couple miles we will then bear east and ascend Ybarra Canyon. The streamside vegetation changes here and the trail passes through a densely shaded oak savanna occassionally interrupted by small grassy meadows. The top of the canyon empties onto Michael D. Antonovich Regional Park at Joughin Ranch (https://lamountains.com/parks.asp?parkid=36) under Oat Mountain where we will take our snack break.

At this point we can extend the hike and explore a new trail depending on group.

We complete our loop by heading south across Chatsworth's Deer Lake Highlands and return to Devils Canyon via Echo Canyon

Directions: Take the 101 or 118 to Topanga Canyon Blvd. Head north to the end of street and make a left on Poema Place for about 50-100 yards and park on street. From West LA take the 405 North to the 118 West.

Pay attention to the lane you are in at the end of Topanga and park on north side of street.

Note: Much of Ybarra Canyon is private property and has been closed to hikers for over a year. Trail will be overgrown and gone in some places. There may be some meandering. Long pants is recommended. If you don't like hiking on unmanaged trails, this hike is not for you. I have acquired permission to pass through.

You've been warned....no whining!
