DESCRIPTION:Help prepare for the upcoming swimsuit season with a hike up the Rocky Peak trail Sunday afternoon.\nPic is Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. DESCRIPTION:5:45 PM START TIME – WEDNESDAY NIGHT – This might be the last time for this event before Kim resumes her weekly hike schedule 🙂\nI’ve been get too much couch time lately and need to get my tuckus moving\, so here we go… \nThis is kind of my “go to” hike\, it’s on my way home\, it’s not too long and the views can be spectacular! \nThis is a great weeknight hike\, not too hard nor too easy – I would say it’s “Just Right”! \nAlthough not a true beginner’s hike\, the gain is spread out evenly over the whole climb which makes it fall on the easier end of the intermediate scale (while still being a good workout). There is a great picnic table at the top which makes it perfect place to do a little socializing during these crazy times! . We will try to limit this time to about 15-20 minutes max. so we can get back down at a decent hour (I’m shooting for around 7:30ish)\, so I can grab some afterward…it is during of the week after all! \nIt can also get a bit chilly up there\, even during the warmest weather\, so if you get cold easily bring a jacket\, hat\, gloves\, blanket or other suitable warming device. \nDirections: From the 101 take the Ventu Park exit and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn…um…left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so let’s try to be somewhat restrained. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Montecito Multi-Trail
DESCRIPTION:This week: Montecito Multi-Trail. Parking between Wiman and San Ysidro Trailheads on E Mtn Drive OR meeting at Big 5 for carpool. This route ascends Wiman trail to the intersection of Old Pueblo trail where we turn left and head West to San Ysidro trail. We turn right and head North along San Ysidro for a bit before veering West across the creek to pick up McMenemy Trail. McMenemy traverses the hills above some of the prettiest vistas of Montecito. We’ll turn up and climb Saddle Rock trail which has some beautifully colored rocks (pictured) and lands at the photo-op friendly\, heart-shaped rock art plateau. After some refreshments we’ll continue North to the Edison Catway and turn right and head East all the way back to San Ysidro trail up by the single track. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Saturday Morning Flores Peak Hike with Ella
DESCRIPTION:Tick off another 5 Peaks Challenge summit with Flores Peak! \nWe’ll start our journey at Rattlesnake Canyon and make our way up to the Meadow\, where we’ll turn right and head up to Gibraltar Road. The hike to the road is a bit of a challenge\, with an average grade of 13%\, including some steeper sections hitting over 20%. Once we reach Gibraltar Road\, we’ll take a left and hike about a third of a mile to the Gibraltar Rock outcropping. This is where the real adventure begins\, including a steep half-mile scramble with 700 feet of elevation gain to the top of Flores Peak. At the top\, we’ll find a stunning rock garden with plenty of picturesque spots to enjoy the view of Santa Barbara below. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon to an Abandoned Mining Operation Hike
DESCRIPTION:Time to get back hiking now that the clocks are changing! Join me Wednesday\, March 11 to hike the canyon and then go up to the old Cochina Mine. There should be some lovely green and flowers along the way.\nThis group usually does not hike at a slow pace so please keep that in mind if joining.\nStarting out Las Llajas Canyon Trail is fairly easy but it does become a moderately difficult hike if you decide to hike up to the mine area. As a group we can decide if we are up to going up the hill to the mine or not\, so it will depend on how we feel due to weather\, light etc and if we can stay together. If we go to the mine it might be more like 7 miles. You can always decide to stay in the canyon and do the easy route and we can decide as a group if we want to go a little further. Do note that we won’t wait too long if you are behind a good distance but would keep going.\nThe mine at the top still has some shells and interesting relics! Each time I go I see or learn something different about the place. \nThis hike should probably only take about 2 hours at my pace but allow for 3 just in case! We will take a short break to explore the mine area and then head back the way we came. It will probably be dark on the way back so please make sure you have a light. The hill up to the mine is steep and not for beginners\, The canyon portion is easy and scenic but please wear shoes appropriate for hiking with good tread. \nDistance: 6 miles (or more depending on what you decide) \nElevation Gain: 1000′ \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate \nDogs: no \nRestrooms: no \nWater Fountain: No \nTrail: Out and back \nSunset: 7:00pm please bring a light or charged phone as it will be dark on the way back.\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes can be on this trail so beware! Something else occasionally sighted here depending on the time of year are wandering steers since the trail is in a ranching area. Slip-‘n-fall is always possible so please wear good shoes or use poles if you wish to\, poison oak may also be on the trail so watch what you brush up against. \nBring: \n\nPlease bring at minimum a water bottle of at least a liter\, a mistake beginners often make is thinking it is cool or easier so they do not need much water. I would rather carry it and not need it than not have it.\nAn optional snack if you think you need one for when we take a little break at the mine or at our halfway turn around point.\nFlashlight/headlamp\nHat or sunglasses if you feel you need them since we start in daylight\nAn extra layer to put on and off\, when you stop it can get chilly!\n\nThis hike will be cancelled: if it is excessively hot\, windy\, rainy or if less than 2 people besides myself are signed up by the afternoon of the event. \nDriving directions and parking: 118 Yosemite offramp go toward the hills and turn right at Evening Sky\, trailhead on the left. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. DESCRIPTION:Gaining a little daylight on the Chumash Feb 26\, 2026. Thank you Jimbo \nThe long winter on the Chumash is coming to a close. At least half of the hike will now be in daylight. By this time Thursday you should have figured out you forgot to set your clocks ahead and no excuses for showing up an hour early will be entertained. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. DESCRIPTION:Daylight Saving time is here and time to start the Friday night hikes.\nBring a head lamp or flash light (cell phone flash light will do). \nJoin me on a moderate five mile loop with a total elevation gain/loss of about 800 ft. \nPlease meet at the Dos Vientos Community Park Tennis Courts near the corner of Rancho Dos Vientos and Borchard Rd.\nAt about the 2 mile mark there is an overlook to the ocean. We will stop at a bench and have a break. Bring snacks to share\nThis hike explores some of the neighborhood trails in the Dos Vientos area of the southwestern Conejo Valley. Although most of this route is on trails and/or dirt utility roads\, there are three street crossings\, and a few minutes on a roadside trail. From high on the trails\, there are outstanding views of the nearby Dos Vientos residential area\, as well as distant vistas including Camarillo\, Thousand Oaks\, surrounding mountains and open space\, a secluded pond\, the Pacific coast\, and two of the Channel Islands. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Come join us Wednesday\, March 18 for an afternoon/evening workout hike!\nWe start on time at Wildwood Park where there are a ton of trails. We will be veering right at the Santa Rosa Trail/Box Canyon sign and go up a steep incline\, which is about 1 mile to the top. If you are a beginner you could do the hill and then turn around to make it a heart-pounding 2 mile hike. The rest of us will keep going at a good pace as the trail loops around so you can see Santa Rosa Valley/Camarillo and then back to the trailhead in Wildwood. \nDistance: 6.3 miles \nElevation Gain: 1000+ \nDifficulty: Intermediate Hike. If a Beginner tags along they should turn around at the top and not do the loop. Please do not expect us to wait for you. \nDogs: No \nRestrooms: There is a pit toilet at the trailhead \nWater Fountain: no \nParking: Free parking lot just note when the gate closes for the night \nTrail: This is a loop trail unless you just want to do 2 miles up to the ridge and back. \nSunset: 7:05 pm bring flashlight/headlamp or charged phone for a light\, even though you might not need it\, always good to have light just in case. \nWeather: It can always start out warm at this trailhead since there is no shade. \n\nHike may be cancelled a few hours before event due to extreme weather or if less than 2 besides the leader are signed up.\nPlease pay attention to the comments the day of since we are going into a heatwave in the days before the hike.\n\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes and poison oak can be at this trail. DESCRIPTION:Gaining a little daylight on the Chumash Feb 26\, 2026. Thank you Jimbo \nThe long winter on the Chumash is coming to a close. At least half of the hike will now be in daylight. By this time Thursday you should have figured out you forgot to set your clocks ahead and no excuses for showing up an hour early will be entertained. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. SUMMARY:Thrilling Tuesday Hike: Whiteface! - 5:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:This is a requested event by several members that I was supposed to schedule last year…sorry for the delay! \nThis is my all time favorite hike in the local area and for about a three year period I hiked it 4-5 times a week. While it is a relatively short hike at around 1 mile each way\, the elevation gain is around 800′.\nI used this hike for my fitness training and still have the unofficial world record at 28:28 round trip…unfortunately today (3/15/26) it took me 35 minutes just to make the assent. The trail conditions have deteriorated over the years and I am a tad older! Which reminds me of what my Dad says\, “The older I get\, the better I use to be!”. One of my favorite songs is also titled “The Older I Get”\, by Alan Jackson. It has a slightly different meaning and one that really resonates with me… \nPLEASE NOTE: No beginners…..\nMust be comfortable hiking a demanding route on a steep ridge and you need to wear lugged shoe soles because its very slippery in some sections.\nWhen you sign up you will automatically go on the wait-list and I will make the decision to move people to “Going”. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/c/7/c/600_453940060.jpeg \nWhiteface is the aptly named white cliff with several trees you see when looking North up Sycamore Dr.\nWhile it is short\, it will definitely give your heart\, lungs and legs a good workout. There are some very steep sections with some rock scrambling (bring gloves if you have sensitive pinkies) and areas of severe drop-offs. So if your afraid of heights this hike is not for you…but believe me the views are worth a little scare! \nWe won’t be lingering too long at the top and we will try to be back at our cars no later than dusk\, which is 7:30 p.m. (The park officially closes at 10:00 p.m.) \nWe will meet in the lower of the two parking areas up near the dog park\, but please don’t bring your dog on the hike! \n• Total mileage: Approx. 2 mi. \n• Elevation gain: 750’+ \n• What to bring: 1-2 liters of water\, energy snacks\, hiking shoes/boots\, gloves for your pinkies and a flashlight just in case. \n• Parking: Lower of the two parking areas nearest to the dog park. \nDriving directions from: E. Simi Valley/S.F. Valley take the 118 Freeway. West\, exit Tapo Canyon Rd. turn right and head North approx. 1.7 mi.\, turn left on Lost Canyons Dr.\, head West approx. 2.1 mi.\, turn right into Big Sky Park and drive to upper Dog Park area. \nDriving directions from: W. Simi Valley/Conejo Valley take the 118 Freeway. East\, exit Erringer Rd. turn left and head North approx. 1.1 mi.\, turn right on Lost Canyons Dr.\, head East approx. .9 mi.\, turn left into Big Sky Park and drive to upper Dog Park area. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability: You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.
