SUMMARY:Chumash trail sunset hike at 5:30 5:30 5:30 pm Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Sun setting from the Chumash trail on Sept 25\, 2025. Thank you Jimbo \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. (Just kidding\, Mark\, don’t get touchy!)\nNote: Kurt will not be attending except for when he visits from Michigan. \nDistance: 5.4 miles\nElevation Gain: 1200′\nDifficulty: Intermediate – hard for beginners\nDogs: Yes\, but must be leashed\nRestrooms: No\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: Free on Flanagan\nTrail: Out and back\, single track\, excellent condition\nSunset: Varies\, but bring a headlamp or flashlight when needed! \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, COVID-19 infected hikers \nBring:\nFlashlight/headlamp when it’s dark\nSunscreen and hat when it’s not (It gets hot as Hades in summer)\nLOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L if you sweat a lot) \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY:\n• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.\n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries.\n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being.\n• Hiking and other outdoor events are inherently dangerous and accidents can happen. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions.\n• Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Beach Hike - Zuma Beach to Point Dume
DESCRIPTION:I invite you to join me on this beginner friendly 4-mile hike with an elevation gain of 250′. It’s getting too dark for evening walks on the beach\, so I am testing out a Friday late afternoon beach walk. \nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike is not what you are looking for\, please find another that suits your needs. Thank you. \nMeet in front of the “Sunset Restaurant.” We will start promptly at 4:30 (no wait time) so please be there on time. If you are late\, face the ocean and turn left. \nThe Beach Walk \n\nThe tide will be pretty high at 4:30 (low tide is at 7:22pm)\, we may or may not be able to walk along the beach\, if not we’ll walk through the parking lot to the point.\nOur first stop is the 194-step staircase that leads down to the shore on the other side of the point. We’ll hang out a few minutes\, then walk up the same 194 steps back to the trail.\nFor those who don’t want to do the stairs\, you can hang out at the top with DaveR.\nThen we’ll do the usual hike up to the top and admire the views. Bring a jacket\, it can get windy and cooler up at the top.\nFinally\, we’ll take the trail along the boardwalk and around the cliffside and to the point.\nLet’s top off the evening with a good meal at Spruzzo’s. Here’s the dinner menu.\n\nChecklist \n\nBring your flashlights just in case we need them.\nBring a least a liter of water\, snacks for energy\, hat\, poles if you need them\, sunscreen.\nBring a wind breaker as it can be windy at the top.\nBring a jacket if you easily get cold.\nSandals or water shoes is the preferred footwear for the beach part of the walk\, barefoot is good too.\nFor the trail going up to the top\, you may prefer to wear something else (my water shoes work fine for the beach and trail).\nYou might get wet so bring a towel or brush to dry off and get the sand off your feet.\n\nOther details \n\nHigh tide is at 11:49am and low tide is at 7:22pm.\nSunset is 6:28pm and the last light is at 6:52pm.\nDifficulty: As hard as a walk on the beach.\nDogs: No. Dogs are not allowed on state beaches.\nRestrooms: Yes\, several on the beach but may be locked up at a certain time.\nWater Fountain: no\nKNOWN DANGERS: Drowning\, slip and fall\, sea monsters\, mermaids\, frisbee impact\, cold feet\, tsunami\n\nParking\nThere is FREE Parking along Westward Beach Road toward the Sunset restaurant. It also gets really crowded there so you may have to backtrack quite a bit to find a parking space. Please give yourself ample time to park and walk to the restaurant. \nThere is also paid parking past the restaurant\, but there is a fee. \nDIRECTIONS \n\nGoogle Coordinates: 34.011014\, -118.816616\nClick here for the Google Map\nAddress to the restaurant: 6800 Westward Beach Road\, Malibu\, CA. Westward Beach Rd is off of Pacific Coast Hwy\, just South of Zuma Beach.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY \n\nYou must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.\nThe PM Hiker organizers are not trained leaders and do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips.\nIf you sign up for any event\, you are releasing the PM Hiker organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries.\nHiking and other outdoor events can be dangerous\, and accidents can happen.\nPer Meetup rules\, you are responsible for your own safety and well-being. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You take full responsibility for your own actions.\nThese rules apply to any guests you may invite.

SUMMARY:Sunday Rocky Trail Hike at 5:00pm.
DESCRIPTION:The south side of Jenga Rock with the actual Rocky Peak in the center above on Sept 7 2025. Thanks Alan and his smartphone camera. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. The lemonade stand operators apologize for never being there when youre hot and thirsty\, or not. \nDistance: 5.0 miles (I think anyway\, but 4.9 semi officially). \nElevation Gain: 1200′ \nDifficulty: Intermediate – hard for beginners \nDogs: Yes\, but must be leashed \nRestrooms: No \nWater Fountain: No \nParking: Free at trailhead \nTrail: Out and back\, single track\, rugged \nSunset: Varies\, but bring a headlamp or flashlight when needed! \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, COVID-19 infected hikers \nBring: \nFlashlight/headlamp when it’s dark \nSunscreen and hat when it’s not (It gets hot as Hades in summer) \nLOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L if you sweat a lot) \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY: \n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries. \n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Trail Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me Wednesday\, October 15 for an evening hike. There is a chance of rain Tuesday into Wednesday so please pay attention the day of in case it cancels due to weather.\nThis is a pleasant area to hike in to get some exercise and is for advanced beginners if they are working on increasing their pace. We can decide as a group once there if we want it short and sweet or to extend the hike to the tarpits. \nI hike for conditioning We only stop briefly to catch our breath at the top of the hill and to regroup if we need to and maybe a brief break at about the halfway point.\nThis trail is not particularly steep so anyone at any level can start with us and hike at your own pace just let us know at the beginning of the hike so I can provide directions if you are faster or slower on where to turn as there will not be a sweep. \nDistance: about 5 miles ish\, depending on whether we go to the tarpits or not\nElevation Gain: 698 feet\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate due to pace and steepness\, loose gravel\nDogs: No\nRestrooms: No\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: Free street parking\, just note there are some no parking signs and do not park there!\nTrail: Lolypop/Loop trail\nSunset: 6:20 pm please bring a charged phone for light or headlamp/flashlight for safety.\nWeather: Heat over 85 degrees (at 6)\, Santa Ana Winds over 12mph or rain cancels the hike (I won’t hike in those conditions). \nHike will be cancelled if by Noon the day of the hike less than 2 hikers besides myself are signed up. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes are in the area on the trail so be mindful where you step\, a slip-‘n-fall is always possible so wear proper shoes\,/use poles if you prefer\, poison oak may also be on the trail so please watch what you brush up against! \nBring:\nFlashlight/headlamp or charged phone\, in case it is dark at the end\nA personal snack if you have not gotten to eat dinner so you have some energy to hike. \nLOTS of H20 is always recommended. A suggestion for this hike is 2 liters just to be on the safe side\, always better to have more than not enough. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY:\n• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.\n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries.\n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Arroyo Burro
DESCRIPTION:This week: Arroyo Burro. Parking at the Water Processing Plant/Jesusita Trailhead off San Roque Road. This route follows Jesusita Trail for a little over 1/2 a mile\, then bears left to Arroyo Burro Trail. The route meanders through private land on North Ontare before ascending a steep power line access/fire break road to the single track. That single track gently winds along the range offering stunning views of the Eastern Goleta Valley. Destination is a rocky flat spot code named 420 (for reasons I do not understand) where we’ll break for a snack.\nDistance – 6.3 mi\nAscent – 1820ft\nWater crossings – Step ove\nRock scrambling – No\nBush whacking – Maybe a little up top\nMaximum Grade – >25%\nStrava Effort – 1.8x \nTrailhead: Cater Water Processing Plant/Jesusita Trailhead\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/P6Sh6xBTPxHk4YFo7 \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3231466765950701460 \nHike Leader this week will be Carlos Alvarez. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Carlos can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. By being a member of this group\, you hereby agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from any group functions. You agree that you nor any third party will hold any of the group’s leaders liable for any injury\, loss\, or damage to your own self or property arising directly or as a consequence of a group activity. You also agree that your membership of this group is based on an “at will” basis.

SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me for a pleasant intermediate paced evening hike.\nI am choosing this hike for Wednesday because there is a Double Comet Lemmon event happening this week that we may be able to see on our way back or even to our mid point.\nWe will hike to Danielson Campground\, it might be dark but we can take an optional brief snack break at the campground. Bring a light if you want to do that\, otherwise we probably won’t stop very long at the picnic tables the group can decide.\nWe will be on pavement or gravel most of the way which makes it a little easier. It can be hot starting out but it cools down pretty quickly. There might be a chance of mosquitos here so don’t say I did not warn you. \nThis also is considered a reverse hike in that the hardest section is returning back up the paved hill at the end. \nDistance: 6 miles on Pavement and gravel road \nElevation Gain: about 600 ft \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate hike due to pace and distance\, but an experienced fast paced beginner or someone willing to go the distance (we only stop at the halfway point/picnic tables) should be able to do it too\, please do not expect anyone to wait for you if you are slower and do not know the way. \nDogs: No \nRestrooms: There is an Andy Gump toilet mid hike \nWater Fountain: No \nParking: Free\, make sure you do not park on the street across from the trailhead or you will get a ticket. Park farther down at Potrero and Pinehill on the right then walk to the trailhead. Please review the driving directions as we park in a neighborhood and not at the trailhead.\nGPS pin has not been reliable lately so review directions.\nTrail: Out and back\, pavement/fireroad this hike goes down at the beginning and up at the end \nSunset: 6:12pm bring flashlight or headlamp (a charged phone with a flashlight works too) will be needed for the way back to the car. \nWeather: Adverse Weather conditions will cancel the hike. Come prepared with a light layer in your pack in case you get chilly from all the sweat! (I usually get chilled on the way back). \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, poison oak\, Mosquitoes may all be encountered on this hike\, bug spray might be useful here\, possibly due to recent winds and dry weather we won’t encounter them this time. \nIt is always possible to slip and fall though the road is flat wear comfortable shoes that you can wear on pavement or dirt. \nBring: Your headlamp/light\, a personal snack\, light layer and LOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L or more L if you sweat a lot). Bug spray if you think you need it. \nEvent will cancel if on the day of the hike less than two besides the leader is signed up or if Santa Ana winds kick up since I hate hiking in the wind. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY: \n• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions. \n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries. \n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. \n• Hiking and other outdoor events are inherently dangerous and accidents can happen. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Arlington Peak
DESCRIPTION:This week: Solstice Part 1 – Arlington Peak. Since the Solstice is Friday\, we’re dividing Solstice celebration into 2 parts. Part 1: Beautiful sunset views of our cherished town. Part 2: (following week) the easier hike and food/drink extravaganza at Dry Falls. This week we’ll meet at Tunnel Trailhead at 6:30p (please carpool). This route ascends Tunnel trail 1.0mi to Inspiration Point Trail. We’ll follow Inspiration Trail for 0.6mi to the South access trail to Arlington Peak. This segment is about a mile long but ascends 1400ft\, so pretty steep and scrambly. We’ll pause for refreshments up top and take in the views. Arlington Peak affords hikers some of the best views of Santa Barbara. The descent is very steep and requires some use of hands to navigate. At the bottom we turn right (South) for about 0.2mi where we meet back with Tunnel Trail and return 1.0mi back to the trailhead and our vehicles.\nDistance – 4.8 mi\nAscent – 2397ft\nWater crossings – NO\nRock scrambling – YES!\nBush whacking – SOME\nMaximum Grade – >50%!!\nStrava Effort – 2.4x \nTrailhead: Tunnel Trailhead (aka Inspiration Point TH)\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/ySqYW7G5Zpc7CZri7 \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3298516557239974610 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Snyder Trail
DESCRIPTION:This week: Snyder Trail. We will be ascending Snyder trail from Paradise Road all the way to Camino Cielo. This is a gentle climb with some single track and some road sections\, culminating in what used to be Knapp’s Castle\, now lost to antiquity. We’ll replenish up top and head down the same route. This hike affords some great views of the sky and stars (and launches)! \nDistance – 7.1 mi\nAscent – 1910 ft\nWater crossings – NO\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >15%\nStrava Effort – 1.9x (Inspiration Point = 1.0) \nTrailhead: Snyder Trailhead\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/4qxJKmQW7kXPnTkv7 \nCarpool: Big 5 in Five points departs 6:00p\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/sNS6bCn9NBw8Yvyc7 \nStrava link:\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3225865253285094420 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655.

SUMMARY:Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hike in search of fall colors\, this can be a beautiful spot for that.\nIt could be hot starting out (no shade) and then also get cooler as it can get windy in this area so please come prepared with layers!\nIt has been over a year since I last did this hike so nuances or changes in the trail might have occurred. Also hard to predict water level as there could be some rain that would increase the water but at this time it is probably pretty dry\, there is usually always a trickle of water even in dry times.\nI suggest due to the drive distance to try to arrive a little bit before start time. To make sure that we do not end up hiking in the dark we want to start at 2pm or as close to it as possible at my pace it should take only 3-4 hours and we will be done way before dark.\nAs a group though we should set a turn around time for any slower hikers\, to ensure we are not lingering out there too long. \nA beginner could come on their own or should start earlier in the day to allow for more time.\nDistance: 8 miles\nElevation Gain: 500\nDifficulty: Intermediate\, no beginners as we need to stay together\nDogs: A well behaved\, trained dog can join us as long as you do not expect us to wait for you\, in hot weather please understand that we might not wait for you if you are tending to the needs of your dog\nRestrooms: No\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: Parking along road near trailhead\, you will need to purchase a $5 adventure pass. Purchase at Big 5 or REI the day before or morning of. I am not 100% sure if they check for parking as they took out the pit toilet. But I usually have my yearly pass with me just in case.\nTrail: Out and back\, uneven footing\nSunset: 6:01pm we should be back before dark but please bring either a charged phone or headlamp/flashlight just in case as it might be dark in our parking area if we take more than our 3 hour time allotted (at my pace we should be done by 5:30pm latest.\nWeather: Rainy\, wind\, or unusual weather will cancel the hike. The canyon can fill up with water if there is a lot of rain. Should be dry but still plan for some water crossings. \nPlease pay attention to the weather the day of in case there are adverse conditions and then the hike would be cancelled. \nIf by the morning of there are less than 2 signed up besides myself it also may cancel. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak all can happen on this hike. If it does rain while we are hiking we would need to be careful as well (probably not likely).\nBring: a personal snack and plenty of water 2-3 liters minimum\, an extra layer in case it gets cool. I suggest wearing shoes that you do not mind getting wet\, but that also have traction to keep you from slipping on wet ground\, like a good trail runner shoe with traction. Polls are also handy to have if there is water crossings.\nFlashlight/headlamp to be safe\nSunscreen and hat is recommended because we will start in full sun. SUMMARY:Sunday Rocky Trail Hike at 4:00 4:00 4:00 pm.
SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Romero Cyn to the top
DESCRIPTION:This week: Romero Canyon. We will be ascending the single track Romero Canyon trail. This route starts up an overgrown road which is fairly steep\, crosses the creek and hits the intersection of the old Romero Road. We’ll hang left and ascend steadily up a single track to the intersection of that same road to re-group if we’ve split on pace. Crossing that road the remainder of the trail climbs to the overlook peak\, which is a little spur just to the left as the trail to the spool crests. We’ll replenish up top and head down the same route. \nDistance – 6.79 mi\nAscent – 2599 ft\nWater crossings – YES\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >25%\nStrava Effort – 2.5x \nTrailhead: Romero Canyon Trail. Please park completely off the asphalt.\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/JPkPbYFytm9hpZTm9 \nCarpool: Big 5 in Five points departs 6:00p\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/sNS6bCn9NBw8Yvyc7 \nStrava link:\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3288367682117299372 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. We recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks.

SUMMARY:Chumash Night Magic hike at 6pm Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Chumash trail on Nov 14\, 2024. Thank you Jimbo \nEnjoy the magic of hiking the Chumash trail in the dark. Bring a flashlite and come feel the night with us. And\, most importantly\, get outdoors after working inside all day. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows.
