DESCRIPTION:The south side of Jenga Rock with the actual Rocky Peak in the center above on Sept 7 2025. Thanks Alan and his smartphone camera. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. SUMMARY:Chumash Trail for Slow Pokes
DESCRIPTION:This is a slow-poke (fit beginner/intermediate) hike at about 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of 670′. The gain is a continuous steady climb\, and the descent is continuous going down\, but we will take breaks when needed. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. Join me this Wednesday for a lovely afternoon outing featuring two gorgeous landmarks in beautiful Wildwood Park\, while also getting a great workout. Bonus: sunshine! 🌞 \nIt’s a grand tour of two of the main attractions of Wildwood Park. We’ll start at the tennis courts parking lot (refer to location in the map on this post)\, and go through the tunnel to start out on Moonridge Trail. Then we’ll take Stagecoach Bluff and Mesa trails up to Lizard Rock. We’ll pass the highlight of our tour… the water treatment plant!! 👃🏻🤭 Then we’ll descend to the beautiful waterfall. DESCRIPTION:This week: Romero Canyon. We will be ascending the single track Romero Canyon trail. This route starts up an overgrown road which is fairly steep\, crosses the creek and hits the intersection of the old Romero Road. We’ll hang left and ascend steadily up a single track to the intersection of that same road to re-group if we’ve split on pace. Crossing that road the remainder of the trail climbs to the overlook peak\, which is a little spur just to the left as the trail to the spool crests. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. We recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. SUMMARY:East Canyon and Possibly to Mission Peak
DESCRIPTION:Come and join me on a 6-8 mile hike in the Newhall area. There can be some beautiful fall colors in this area at times so let’s check it out. \nThe plan is to hike East Canyon which is 6 miles and possibly add Mission Peak\, depending on what the group decides. There is also an optional short turnout to Rice Canyon\, that I was not planning on doing but you can do as well.\nI will pay attention to the weather and the light\, if it is extremely hot\, rainy or windy I may cancel. I also cancel if less than two are signed up besides myself the morning of the hike. \nElevation Gain: 1800′ (more or less depending on what you do)\nDifficulty: Intermediate\, we are not a slow paced group\, please do not expect us to wait for you if you fall more than a little behind\, only break will be about halfway through. DESCRIPTION:The south side of Jenga Rock with the actual Rocky Peak in the center above on Sept 7 2025. Thanks Alan and his smartphone camera. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. DESCRIPTION:This week: Tequepis Trail. We’ll meet for carpool at Big 5 and drive over to Trailhead. From the parking area near Circle V camp\, we’ll cross the creek a couple places heading steadily upward\, enjoying some great views of Lake Cachuma and the Santa Ynez Valley. This hike\, while long and covering a lot of elevation gain\, is easier than expected given that it never is too steep or requiring high stepping/scrambling over rocks. It is a steady cardio climb\, and we’ll re-group every mile or so. The trail ends at a Camino Cielo frontage road. To the right will be Broadcast Peak and to the left (or straight ahead) a short walk to Camino Cielo and views of the Pacific. Can be windy and cool up top for snack time. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possibly wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. And\, most importantly\, get outdoors after working inside all day. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. DESCRIPTION:Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: McMenemy to Hot Springs
DESCRIPTION:This week: Montecito Loop. Parking at the San Ysidro Trailhead OR meeting at Big 5. This route ascends San Ysidro trail before veering West across the creek to pick up McMenemy Trail. McMenemy traverses the hills above some of the prettiest vistas of Montecito. We’ll turn up and climb Saddle Rock trail which has some beautifully colored rocks (pictured) and lands at the photo-op friendly\, heart-shaped rock art plateau. From there we’ll head toward the catway and West to Hot Springs Hotel and the too-famous hot springs. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. DESCRIPTION:The Los Padres from Above\, an Aerial Perspective with Bill Dewey \nThursday\, November 20\, 6:30pm\nFaulkner Gallery – Santa Barbara Public Library\n40 East Anapamu St.\, Santa Barbara\, CA \nJoin local photographer Bill Dewey as shares images from his archives that cover 30 years of flying over the Los Padres and will include images of the area from the Santa Ynez Mountains to the Cuyama Valley. The images will illustrate the many different looks that the seasons and weather conditions present. The images will give the viewer a new perspective and overview of the wonderful wild country that we are so lucky to have in our backyard. The show will also include several comparison views of the areas affected by the fires of the last several decades. \nBill’s life passion is photographing the California landscape from the ground and the air. For this week\, we’ll keep it at 3 miles because Lisa is and has been off a while and I’m just back from fighting a cold. \nThis is a slow-poke (fit beginner/intermediate) hike at about 3.0 miles with an elevation gain of 670′. DESCRIPTION:This week: Aliso Cyn Loop incl Upper Oso. We will walk the road and through Sage Hill campground to avoid $10 parking fee (cheapskate). Then we walk the lovely Aliso Cyn interpretive trail which leads to the climb up out of the valley. Then we drop down to Upper Oso campground\, which is closed and overgrown 🙁 We’ll pause there for refreshments. On the return we turn left to complete the Aliso Cyn loop\, which meets back with the interpretive trail. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Gaviota Peak
DESCRIPTION:This week: Gaviota Peak. Meet at South Coast Railroad Museum at 5:50p for the shuttle to Trailhead. This route ascends the South side road and Trespass Trail to Gaviota Peak. The last mile gets pretty steep\, so take your time so you don’t gas. Trail offers great views of the Pacific Ocean and Gaviota Pass. Stop at the top for refreshments. Gaviota Peak is known to be windy\, so do bring appropriate over gear. Return on the North side fire road back to the shuttle vehicles. For questions\, Carlos can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the magic of hiking the Chumash trail in the dark. Bring a flashlite and come feel the night with us. And\, most importantly\, get outdoors after working inside all day. A near full moon is forecast. Hopefully I read the charts correctly\, and its not cloudy.\nChumash trail on Nov 14\, 2024. Thank you Jimbo \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you.
