SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Tequepis
DESCRIPTION:This week: Tequepis Trail. We’ll meet for carpool at Big 5 and drive over to Trailhead. From the parking area near Circle V camp\, we’ll cross the creek a couple places heading steadily upward\, enjoying some great views of Lake Cachuma and the Santa Ynez Valley. This hike\, while long and covering a lot of elevation gain\, is easier than expected given that it never is too steep or requiring high stepping/scrambling over rocks. It is a steady cardio climb\, and we’ll re-group every mile or so. The trail ends at a Camino Cielo frontage road. To the right will be Broadcast Peak and to the left (or straight ahead) a short walk to Camino Cielo and views of the Pacific. Can be windy and cool up top for snack time. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possibly wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. DESCRIPTION:Chumash trail on Nov 14\, 2024. Thank you Jimbo \nEnjoy the magic of hiking the Chumash trail in the dark. Bring a flashlite and come feel the night with us. And\, most importantly\, get outdoors after working inside all day. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. DESCRIPTION:You are in for a treat on the Vista Del Mar trail with amazing views of the ocean\, a different perspective of Boney Mountain\, pretty scenery around the neighborhoods\, and ponds. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that suits your needs. \nThis is 5.2-mile loop hike with an elevation gain of 740′. The route is moderately challenging in some areas but suitable for fit beginner/intermediate levels. SUMMARY:Sunday 4pm - Sunset Hike at Rocky Peak
DESCRIPTION:Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. DESCRIPTION:Hey\, let’s walk the Calleguas Creek Walkway. It’s a beautifully-paved walkway that runs right alongside the creek. We’ll save local trails from damage while also getting sunshine and exercise. Win-win. \nThis hike is on a paved multi-use path and a few sidewalks\, avoiding muddy trails after days of rain. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: McMenemy to Hot Springs
DESCRIPTION:This week: Montecito Loop. Parking at the San Ysidro Trailhead OR meeting at Big 5. This route ascends San Ysidro trail before veering West across the creek to pick up McMenemy Trail. McMenemy traverses the hills above some of the prettiest vistas of Montecito. We’ll turn up and climb Saddle Rock trail which has some beautifully colored rocks (pictured) and lands at the photo-op friendly\, heart-shaped rock art plateau. From there we’ll head toward the catway and West to Hot Springs Hotel and the too-famous hot springs. The show will also include several comparison views of the areas affected by the fires of the last several decades. \nBill’s life passion is photographing the California landscape from the ground and the air. Ready to take off at a moment’s notice if the day’s light and skies intrigue him\, Bill’s aerial photography is done from his Cessna 172\, which he keeps at the Santa Barbara airport. Then we walk the lovely Aliso Cyn interpretive trail which leads to the climb up out of the valley. Then we drop down to Upper Oso campground\, which is closed and overgrown 🙁 We’ll pause there for refreshments. On the return we turn left to complete the Aliso Cyn loop\, which meets back with the interpretive trail. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. The last mile gets pretty steep\, so take your time so you don’t gas. Trail offers great views of the Pacific Ocean and Gaviota Pass. Stop at the top for refreshments. Gaviota Peak is known to be windy\, so do bring appropriate over gear. Return on the North side fire road back to the shuttle vehicles. For questions\, Carlos can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. This is a steady climb (about 20 switchbacks) across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below\, and of Simi Valley. DESCRIPTION:This week: Cold Springs – East Fork. Meet at Cold Springs Trailhead on Mountain Drive. This route climbs local favorite Cold Springs Trail passing waterfalls and several iconic waypoints; city overlook\, lone tree\, Montecito Peak and finally the Spool (water tower) at Camino Cielo. We’ll enjoy a snack at the top\, perhaps atop the Spool\, before descending back the same trail. When we arrive back to the overlook\, hopefully with great view of city lights below\, we’ll take the Ridge trail for the final descent back the cars. DESCRIPTION:We have regained a minute of daylight at sunset\, believe it or not. Last week it was 4:44pm and Sunday it will be 4:45pm. See you there to celebrate. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. The hike to the road is 13% on average\, but does have some brief 20%+ sections. Once we hit the road we’ll turn LEFT and hike the road for about a third of a mile to the Gibraltar Rock outcropping which will be on our left. DESCRIPTION:To close out the year\, we are handing the mic to you for a special Trail Talks Open Mic event\, and have five great presenters who will be sharing about their outdoor adventures\, passions\, and experience! \nTrail Talks Open Mic Night: Tales from the Wild \nFeaturing: \nAlyssa Kliewer: Field Notes from the Golden State – local writer and artist\, Alyssa will share about her journey through California’s National Parks and other hidden gems and the inspiration that comes with living in what has to be the most beautiful state. \nJill Murray: Blazing Trails: Empowering Girl Scouts Through Adventure – an avid backpacker\, Jill will share about Trek Wild\, a volunteer-led group that teaches Girl Scouts to hike and backpack in a safe\, structured\, and fun program. Jill started backpacking when she was 10 with the Girl Scouts\, and is thrilled to now be sharing backpacking with her daughter and other Girl Scouts. \nHolly Sherwin: The Wonders of Artemisia Californica – naturalist\, artist\, environmental educator\, forager\, and trail enthusiast\, Holly has roamed the Santa Barbara hillsides for over 20 years and loves to share her knowledge and connection to this special place and its non-human inhabitants\, including one of her all time favorites: California Sagebrush. \nDan Fontaine: How Many Toes Does a Bear Have? – avid naturalist and birder\, Dan is going to share about several encounters with bears he’s had\, and how we might begin to relate to them\, plus if we’re lucky\, he will share with us a trick for remembering how many toes appear in the track of a bear. \nDianna Jaynes: The Magic of the Trans-Catalina Trail – self-described nature- and hiking-obsessed Californian Dianna will share about her journey with discovering ultra-light thru-hiking and her experience backpacking the Trans-Catalina Trail in May 2025\, which is a rugged 38.5 mile\, four-day traverse of Catalina Island. \nThis free presentation is part of the Trail Talks series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. \nThe next talk in the series is Thursday\, February 19\, 2026\, Far-flung Hikes of the Los Padres with Ojai Valley News author Perry Van Houten
