SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Aliso Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This week: Aliso Cyn Loop incl Upper Oso. We will walk the road and through Sage Hill campground to avoid $10 parking fee (cheapskate). Then we walk the lovely Aliso Cyn interpretive trail which leads to the climb up out of the valley. Then we drop down to Upper Oso campground\, which is closed and overgrown 🙁 We’ll pause there for refreshments. On the return we turn left to complete the Aliso Cyn loop\, which meets back with the interpretive trail. Hard Option: Climb “The Wall” instead of switchbacks out of Upper Oso.\nDistance – 7.1 mi\nAscent – 1513ft\nWater crossings – 3” over concrete\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >20% (Option: The Wall at 45%!)\nOverall Effort – Medium \nCarpool: Big 5 North lot at 6:00pm \nTrailhead: Snyder Trailhead. Please park completely off the asphalt.\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/QpaDNh7KLv4sC5k98 \nStrava link:\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3227394716254977790 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. By being a member of this group\, you hereby agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from any group functions. You agree that you nor any third party will hold any of the group’s leaders liable for any injury\, loss\, or damage to your own self or property arising directly or as a consequence of a group activity. You also agree that your membership of this group is based on an “at will” basis.

SUMMARY:Chumash Thanksgiving hike
DESCRIPTION:Chumash trail on Nov 14\, 2024. Thank you Jimbo \nFor those who might want to burn off some over indulgence or would just rather hike than eat. This is for you. If no one registers by 4pm the hike will be cancelled. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. (Just kidding\, Mark\, don’t get touchy!)\nNote: Kurt will not be attending except for when he visits from Michigan. \nDistance: 5.4 miles\nElevation Gain: 1200′\nDifficulty: Intermediate – hard for beginners\nDogs: Yes\, but must be leashed\nRestrooms: No\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: Free on Flanagan\nTrail: Out and back\, single track\, excellent condition\nSunset: Varies\, but bring a headlamp or flashlight when needed! \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, COVID-19 infected hikers \nBring:\nFlashlight/headlamp when it’s dark\nSunscreen and hat when it’s not (It gets hot as Hades in summer)\nLOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L if you sweat a lot) \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY:\n• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.\n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries.\n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Sunday 4pm - Hike with a possible sunset on Rocky Peak Trail
DESCRIPTION:Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. The lemonade stand operators apologize for never being there when youre hot and thirsty\, or not. \nDistance: 5.0 miles (I think anyway\, but 4.9 semi officially). \nElevation Gain: 1200′ \nDifficulty: Intermediate – hard for beginners \nDogs: Yes\, but must be leashed \nRestrooms: No \nWater Fountain: No \nParking: Free at trailhead \nTrail: Out and back\, single track\, rugged \nSunset: Varies\, but bring a headlamp or flashlight when needed! \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, COVID-19 infected hikers \nBring: \nFlashlight/headlamp when it’s dark \nSunscreen and hat when it’s not (It gets hot as Hades in summer) \nLOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L if you sweat a lot) \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY: \n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries. \n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Cold Springs
DESCRIPTION:This week: Cold Springs – East Fork. Meet at Cold Springs Trailhead on Mountain Drive. This route climbs local favorite Cold Springs Trail passing waterfalls and several iconic waypoints; city overlook\, lone tree\, Montecito Peak and finally the Spool (water tower) at Camino Cielo. We’ll enjoy a snack at the top\, perhaps atop the Spool\, before descending back the same trail. When we arrive back to the overlook\, hopefully with great view of city lights below\, we’ll take the Ridge trail for the final descent back the cars. Expect a late return for this longer hike.\nDistance – 9.21mi\nAscent – 2691ft\nWater crossings – EASY\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >15%\nStrava Effort – 2.8x \nCarpool: Big 5 North lot at 6:00pm \nTrailhead: Cold Springs Trailhead\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/bsVjiLdtkqMTYRTSA \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3247792500807304194 \nHike Leader this week will be Carlos Alvarez. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Carlos can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possibly wet.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Gibraltar Rock for WINTER SOLSTICE!!!
DESCRIPTION:This week: Rattlesnake to Gibraltar Rock. WINTER SOLSTICE EDITION!! \nWe’ll hike up Rattlesnake to the Meadow where we’ll turn RIGHT up to Gibraltar Road. The hike to the road is 13% on average\, but does have some brief 20%+ sections. Once we hit the road we’ll turn LEFT and hike the road for about a third of a mile to the Gibraltar Rock outcropping which will be on our left. We will have a vehicle parked across from the Rock for fancy refreshments this time. Potluck-style feast w/ coordination on Whatsapp. BYO mess kit/cup. There may be option for some roadside shuttle glamping for food/beverage. The front side city views from Gibraltar Rock are unrivaled and this hike should be more beginner friendly. We’ll return on the same route.\nDistance – 5.07mi\nAscent – 1728ft\nWater crossings – EASY\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >20%\nEffort – Medium-Hard\nStrava Effort – 1.5x \nTrailhead: Rattlesnake Trailhead on Las Canoas Rd\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/m42Rjp3rQvnrqpJD9 \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3252849462852065440 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possibly wet.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Dry Falls (Tuesday!)
DESCRIPTION:This week: Dry Falls. NOTE: We are hiking on TUESDAY this week as we expect rain by Wednesday. Meet at Tunnel Trailhead (please carpool). This route ascends Tunnel trail 2.9mi to a rock outcropping in a ravine waterfall where there is hopefully a little water flowing due to recent rain. From the falls\, we will sit on the rocks and enjoy a stellar view of our beautiful town while eating and drinking far better than anyone should expect to on a hike. This hike is fairly tame by Wednesday Evening Hike standards so come one come all!\nDistance – 5.8 mi\nAscent – 1708ft\nWater crossings – NO\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >20%\nStrava Effort – 1.8x (1.0 being Inspiration Point) \nTrailhead: Tunnel Trailhead (but please do carpool!)\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/beKanekLtRhGSJs29 \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3237608381784578294 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. SUMMARY:Chumash Night Magic hike at 6pm Thursday
DESCRIPTION:A little post New Years Eve exercise will not do our waistlines any harm\, so come hike with us and burn off a few calories instead of watching cat videos like I’ve been doing lately.\nThe pic is from the top of Chumash trail on Dec 11\, 2025 @ 19:00:25 Thank you Jimbo \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. SUMMARY:Love the Trails?
DESCRIPTION:Give Back to the Places We Love \nWe all benefit from free access to the incredible network of trails weaving through our coastal mountains\, the Gaviota coastline\, and the Santa Ynez Valley. These trails are a true community treasure—but they are at their best when they are well-loved\, well-used\, and well-cared-for. \nWhile nature provides the views\, it takes hard work and resources to keep our paths safe and accessible. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or just finding your footing\, you can help us pave the way for the future. \nYour donation today goes directly toward: \n\nEssential Maintenance: Clearing brush\, repairing erosion\, and keeping our beloved paths safe.\nNew Construction: expanding our network to explore even more of the spectacular Santa Barbara backcountry.\n\nLet’s ensure these trails remain a treasure for generations to come. \nIf you would like to discuss the future of trails in Santa Barbara County\, join me online on Saturday at 9 am for a Q&A session. \nHappy Trails\,\nMark Wilkinson\nSanta Barbara County Trails Council

SUMMARY:Sunday 4pm - Rocky Peak Trail
DESCRIPTION:Beat the post holiday season doldrums with a hike up the Rocky Peak trail.\nPic is Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023.
