SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Trail Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me Wednesday\, October 15 for an evening hike. There is a chance of rain Tuesday into Wednesday so please pay attention the day of in case it cancels due to weather.\nThis is a pleasant area to hike in to get some exercise and is for advanced beginners if they are working on increasing their pace. We can decide as a group once there if we want it short and sweet or to extend the hike to the tarpits. \nI hike for conditioning We only stop briefly to catch our breath at the top of the hill and to regroup if we need to and maybe a brief break at about the halfway point.\nThis trail is not particularly steep so anyone at any level can start with us and hike at your own pace just let us know at the beginning of the hike so I can provide directions if you are faster or slower on where to turn as there will not be a sweep. \nDistance: about 5 miles ish\, depending on whether we go to the tarpits or not\nElevation Gain: 698 feet\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate due to pace and steepness\, loose gravel\nDogs: No\nRestrooms: No\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: Free street parking\, just note there are some no parking signs and do not park there!\nTrail: Lolypop/Loop trail\nSunset: 6:20 pm please bring a charged phone for light or headlamp/flashlight for safety.\nWeather: Heat over 85 degrees (at 6)\, Santa Ana Winds over 12mph or rain cancels the hike (I won’t hike in those conditions). \nHike will be cancelled if by Noon the day of the hike less than 2 hikers besides myself are signed up. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes are in the area on the trail so be mindful where you step\, a slip-‘n-fall is always possible so wear proper shoes\,/use poles if you prefer\, poison oak may also be on the trail so please watch what you brush up against! \nBring:\nFlashlight/headlamp or charged phone\, in case it is dark at the end\nA personal snack if you have not gotten to eat dinner so you have some energy to hike. \nLOTS of H20 is always recommended. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that suits your needs. \nThe Sunset Hills Trail is a 238-acre open-space area that provides a great view of Bard Lake\, and panoramic views of Conejo Valley\, Simi Hills\, Camarillo/Oxnard\, and the Pacific Ocean. The area features oak woodlands\, nonnative grasslands and coastal sage scrub. SUMMARY:Sunday Rocky Trail Hike at 5:00pm.
DESCRIPTION:The south side of Jenga Rock with the actual Rocky Peak in the center above on Sept 7 2025. Thanks Alan and his smartphone camera. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. SUMMARY:Beach Hike - Zuma Beach to Point Dume
DESCRIPTION:I invite you to join me on this beginner friendly 4-mile hike with an elevation gain of 250′. It’s getting too dark for evening walks on the beach\, so I am testing out a Friday late afternoon beach walk. \nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike is not what you are looking for\, please find another that suits your needs. Thank you. \nMeet in front of the “Sunset Restaurant.” We will start promptly at 4:30 (no wait time) so please be there on time. If you are late\, face the ocean and turn left. \nThe Beach Walk \n\nThe tide will be pretty high at 4:30 (low tide is at 7:22pm)\, we may or may not be able to walk along the beach\, if not we’ll walk through the parking lot to the point.\nOur first stop is the 194-step staircase that leads down to the shore on the other side of the point. We’ll hang out a few minutes\, then walk up the same 194 steps back to the trail.\nFor those who don’t want to do the stairs\, you can hang out at the top with DaveR.\nThen we’ll do the usual hike up to the top and admire the views. Bring a jacket\, it can get windy and cooler up at the top.\nFinally\, we’ll take the trail along the boardwalk and around the cliffside and to the point.\nLet’s top off the evening with a good meal at Spruzzo’s. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: San Ysidro to the Top
DESCRIPTION:This week: San Ysidro to the Top. Parking at San Ysidro Trailhead on E Mtn Drive OR meeting at Big 5 for carpool. This route ascends San Ysidro trail through some nice creek-side properties to the the single track which is NOW OPEN! We head up the single track to the Waterfall (probably dry right now?). From there we bear right up the steep kitty litter part to the top of the waterfall and ascend the steady incline all the way up to Camino Cielo. This trail has been closed for a few years to repair storm damage so I can’t speak to its condition\, but formerly this was one of the best maintained trails in the front country. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Western Plateau Power Pole Hike with optional add on to Elliott
DESCRIPTION:Come and Join us October 8 for an evening hike! We may possibly also be able to catch a glimpse of the 3rd day of supermoon!\nThis hike can have some nice sunset views. We will stop at about a halfway point for a snack break and then at that point we can decide if we want to continue to Mount Elliott. I have not pre-hiked that section recently but whenever I am up there want to to try to make it a loop and from there know how to get to Elliott. We can go to Elliott and then turn around and go back the way we came or make it a loop. \nNote that we leave on time.\nDistance: 6 ish miles depending on what the group decides maybe more\nElevation Gain: 1400+ft\, maybe more if we go to Elliott.\nDifficulty: Intermediate hiker\, no beginners please\, we don’t take many breaks but keep going\nDogs: No\nRestrooms: No\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: This time let’s park in the lot next to the trail. DESCRIPTION:Sun setting from the Chumash trail on Sept 25\, 2025. Thank you Jimbo \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. DESCRIPTION:This week: Jesusita. Parking at the Cater Water Processing Plant/Jesusita Trailhead off San Roque Road. This route follows Jesusita Trail up to Inspiration Point. The route meanders through level ranch land before reaching a road and then ascending a well-trafficked trail up the south side including some switchbacks and then a traverse to a fire break road to the overlook. For questions\, Carlos can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. DESCRIPTION:Come and join me on a more difficult route to Angel Vista!\nFellow hiker (Lina )who is faster paced than me volunteered to be in front as I probably will be slower but she requested I host this hike again as I hosted it over 3 years ago.\nThis is not for beginners\, there are some steep sections that I would recommend using poles on and where quite possibly I will be lagging behind on but Lina says she can take you up and down. \nWe will start at Wendy and Potrero because parking there is best. Then take a side route to the start of the trail.\nDistance: 6 ish miles\nElevation Gain: 1300 Ft\nDifficulty: Intermediate not for beginners due to pace and steepness\nDogs: Please no dogs\nRestrooms: No\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: There is parking by the official trail but the gate closes at 4 pm so we don’t park at that spot. Meet and Park at Wendy and Potrero parking area\nTrail: Out and back\nSunset: 6:18 pm you must have a headlamp or flashlight for this hike\nWeather: unusually hot\, windy or rainy weather will cancel the hike\nKnown Dangers: slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, heatstroke if it is really warm \n\nBring: at least 2L of water to be safe and optional snack in case you get hungry or want to share at the bench mid stopping point.\nFlashlight/headlamp/extra layer in case it gets cool on way down\nSunscreen and hat in case you need starting out\nI suggest hiking/trail shoes with good traction and possibly hiking poles. DESCRIPTION:The south side of Jenga Rock with the actual Rocky Peak in the center above on Sept 7 2025. Thanks Alan and his smartphone camera. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. Thank you Aimee \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. DESCRIPTION:This week: Bill Wallace Trail. Meet at South Coast Railroad Museum 6:00p. We’ll drive to trailhead up the coast a piece. This route ascends Bill Wallace Trail along the ridge to the West of El Capitan Cyn. This trail is in good shape and you get some sweeping views of the coast between Goleta and Gaviota. This trail has a few options to cut distance and elevation. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon to an Abandoned Mining Operation Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join me Wednesday\, September 24 to hike the canyon and then go up to the old Cochina Mine. This group usually does not hike at a slow pace so please keep that in mind if joining.\nLast time we decided to turn around because it was too hot so by request want to give one more try to get to the mine area before we lose our evening daylight!\nStarting out Las Llajas Canyon Trail is fairly easy but it does become a moderately difficult hike if you decide to hike up to the mine area. As a group we can decide if we are up to going up the hill to the mine or not\, so it will depend on how we feel due to weather\, light etc and if we can stay together. If we go to the mine it might be more like 7 miles. You can always decide to stay in the canyon and do the easy route and we can decide as a group if we want to go a little further.\nThe mine at the top still has some shells and interesting relics! Each time I go I see or learn something different about the place. \nThis hike should probably only take about 2 hours at my pace but allow for 3 just in case! We will take a short break to explore the mine area and then head back the way we came. It will probably be dark on the way back so please make sure you have a light. The hill up to the mine is steep and not for beginners\, The canyon portion is easy and scenic but please wear shoes appropriate for hiking with good tread. \nDistance: 6 miles (or more depending on what you decide) \nElevation Gain: 1000′ \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate \nDogs: no \nRestrooms: no \nWater Fountain: No \nTrail: Out and back \nSunset: 6:48 pm please bring a light or charged phone as it will be dark on the way back.\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes can be on this trail so beware! Something else occasionally sighted here depending on the time of year are wandering steers since the trail is in a ranching area. Slip-‘n-fall is always possible so please wear good shoes or use poles if you wish to\, poison oak may also be on the trail so watch what you brush up against. \nBring: \n\nPlease bring at minimum a water bottle of at least a liter\, a mistake beginners often make is thinking it is cool or easier so they do not need much water. I would rather carry it and not need it than not have it.\nAn optional snack if you think you need one for when we take a little break at the mine or at our halfway turn around point.\nFlashlight/headlamp\nHat or sunglasses if you feel you need them since we start in daylight\nAn extra layer to put on and off\, when you stop it can get chilly!\n\nThis hike will be cancelled: if it is excessively hot\, windy\, rainy or if less than 2 people besides myself are signed up by the afternoon of the event. \nDriving directions and parking: 118 Yosemite offramp go toward the hills and turn right at Evening Sky\, trailhead on the left.
