SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Arroyo Burro to Creek
DESCRIPTION:This week: Arroyo Burro. Parking at the Water Processing Plant/Jesusita Trailhead off San Roque Road. This route follows Jesusita Trail for a little over 1/2 a mile\, then bears left to Arroyo Burro Trail. The route meanders through private land on North Ontare before ascending a steep power line access/fire break road to the single track. That single track gently winds along the range offering stunning views of the Eastern Goleta Valley. Destination is the creek about 2/3 up which is where we’ll break for a snack.\nDistance – 8.1 mi\nAscent – 2484ft\nWater crossings – Step over\nRock scrambling – No\nBush whacking – No\nMaximum Grade – >25%\nStrava Effort – 2.4x \nTrailhead: Cater Water Processing Plant/Jesusita Trailhead\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/P6Sh6xBTPxHk4YFo7 \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3450705773910742182 \nHike Leader this week will be Carlos Alvarez. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Carlos can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. By being a member of this group\, you hereby agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from any group functions. SUMMARY:Humpday Hike - Vista of the Angels\, a.k.a. Angel Vista via the Rosewood Trail.
DESCRIPTION:5:45 PM START TIME – WEDNESDAY NIGHT\nI’ve been get too much couch time lately and need to get my tuckus moving\, so here we go… \nThis is kind of my “go to” hike\, it’s on my way home\, it’s not too long and the views can be spectacular! \nThis is a great weeknight hike\, not too hard nor too easy – I would say it’s “Just Right”! \nAlthough not a true beginner’s hike\, the gain is spread out evenly over the whole climb which makes it fall on the easier end of the intermediate scale (while still being a good workout). There is a great picnic table at the top which makes it perfect place to do a little socializing during these crazy times! . We will try to limit this time to about 15-20 minutes max. so we can get back down at a decent hour (I’m shooting for around 7:30ish)\, so I can grab some 🌮🌮 afterward…it is during of the week after all! \nIt can also get a bit chilly up there\, even during the warmest weather\, so if you get cold easily bring a jacket\, hat\, gloves\, blanket or other suitable warming device. \nDirections: From the 101 take the Ventu Park exit and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn…um…left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so let’s try to be somewhat restrained. We will meet at the trailhead on the left/east side of the road. \nDistance: 3.4 miles\nElevation Gain: 790′\nDifficulty: Easy to Intermediate\nDogs: Leashed\, per State law\nRestrooms: No\, but there are many bushes\, but please watch out for the (2) patches of poison oak!\nWater Fountain: No\nParking: Free along the street\nTrail: Single track\, excellent condition\nSunset: 5:15\, so bring a light!!! \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes 🐍\, those pesky rocks that jump up out of know where\, inconsiderate MTBer’s or people that talk your 🦵 off!!! \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability: You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions. Hiking and other outdoor events are inherently dangerous and accidents can happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. This Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Sunday 4pm - Rocky Peak Sunset hike
DESCRIPTION:Beat the post holiday season doldrums with a hike up the Rocky Peak trail.\nPic is Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. The lemonade stand operators apologize for never being there when youre hot and thirsty\, or not. \nDistance: 5.0 miles (I think anyway\, but 4.9 semi officially). \nElevation Gain: 1200′ \nDifficulty: Intermediate – hard for beginners \nDogs: Yes\, but must be leashed \nRestrooms: No \nWater Fountain: No \nParking: Free at trailhead \nTrail: Out and back\, single track\, rugged \nSunset: Varies\, but bring a headlamp or flashlight when needed! \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, COVID-19 infected hikers \nBring: \nFlashlight/headlamp when it’s dark \nSunscreen and hat when it’s not (It gets hot as Hades in summer) \nLOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L if you sweat a lot) \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY: \n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries. \n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips.
We’ll pause for city views and community refreshments and then return mostly the same route\, but down the overlook trail gulley which is a little loose.\nDistance – 6.88 mi\nAscent – 1579ft\nWater crossings – Step over\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >15%\nStrava Effort – 1.7x \nTrailhead: Cater Water Processing Plant/Jesusita Trailhead\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/P6Sh6xBTPxHk4YFo7 \nStrava link:\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3278565038514636218 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. You agree that you nor any third party will hold any of the group’s leaders liable for any injury\, loss\, or damage to your own self or property arising directly or as a consequence of a group activity.
SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon 9 miler from Satwiwa
DESCRIPTION:Come join me for an afternoon 9ish mile exercise hike and an optional snack share.\nThis time we will start in the parking lot to walk a portion of the Sycamore Canyon fire road\, which is very scenic year round and eventually loop around to Danielson Campground\, take a snack break (15-20 minutes) where we can share some snacks/rest at the picnic tables then complete a loop to head back. It might be starting to be very green and beautiful at this time\, but due to rains be prepared for mud puddles/minor water crossings?\nWe will be on pavement or gravel most of the way however I am going to take a side trail to make this a looped 9 mile hike (side trail some call Joanne’s Route). So this hike is a few trails put together in a loop that I have hiked several times. \nDistance: 9 miles (give or take) on Pavement and gravel road \nElevation Gain: about 600 ft \nDifficulty: Intermediate hike due to pace and distance\, but an experienced fast paced beginner or someone willing to go the distance should be able to do it too\, please do not expect anyone to wait for you if you are slower and do not know the way. You can not get lost if you stick to the road. \nDogs: No \nRestrooms: There is at parking lot and Andy Gump toilet mid hike \nWater Fountain: No \nParking: This time since it is daylight we are parking at the far end of Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa. In case lot is full there is overflow parking\, come early just in case to ensure your parking spot. \nTrail: Out and back\, pavement/fireroad this hike goes down at the beginning and up at the end \nSunset: 5:17pm The lot closes at Sunset so we really should be done before then at our pace (all the reason to be at intermediate pace). \nWeather: Adverse Weather conditions will cancel the hike. Come prepared with a light layer in your pack in case you get chilly from all the sweat! (I usually get chilled on the way back and in April it might still be chilly the whole way). \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, poison oak\, Mosquitoes may all be encountered on this hike\, bug spray might be useful here\, possibly due to recent winds and dry weather we won’t encounter them this time. \nIt is always possible to slip and fall though the road is flat wear shoes with a good tread that you can wear on pavement or dirt (hiking or trail runners). \nBring: a personal snack or small snack to share\, light layer and LOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L or more L if you sweat a lot). Bug spray if you think you need it. \nEvent will cancel if on the day of the hike less than two besides the leader is signed up or if Santa Ana winds kick up since I hate hiking in the wind. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY: \n• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions. \n• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries. \n• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Chumash Night Magic hike at 6pm Thursday
DESCRIPTION:A silhouette following me down the Chumash. Looks Canadian.\nThe pic is from the top of Chumash trail on Jan 15\, 2025. SUMMARY:Storm Damage at Baron Ranch Trails
DESCRIPTION:Dear Happy Hiker\, \nJust weeks ago\, Baron Ranch was a place of strength\, challenge\, and beauty. In early December\, runners traversed its ridgelines and canyons during the Island View Endurance Run\, taking in sweeping views of the Gaviota Coast and Channel Islands. Today\, the landscape tells a very different story. \nAccording to the National Weather Service\, the heaviest rainfall fell along the Gaviota Coast and surrounding foothills over a three-day period ending at midnight on Monday\, January 5. Rainfall exceeded eight inches in the mountains above the Baron Ranch trail system. The storms triggered widespread landslides\, rockfalls\, and erosion across the network. The photos in the image gallery show washed-out tread\, collapsed trail edges\, and deeply scarred terrain that was recently stable and well-traveled. \nImage Gallery →\nMap →\nDonate → \nWhat This Means for the Trails\nSome damage can be addressed by trained volunteers. However\, several slide areas will require professional trail crews\, heavy equipment\, and careful regrading to restore safe public access. \nPast storm events have shown what this work entails. Repairing a single trail has cost more than $25\,000 and required hundreds of volunteer hours\, on top of approximately $15\,000 in general trail upkeep each year. With 9 miles of trail impacted\, the scope of recovery at Baron Ranch is significant. \nFor safety reasons\, Baron Ranch Trails are closed as of January 7. Full repairs are expected to take up to eight weeks. \nOur Goal\nRestore safe public access to Baron Ranch trails while building a sustainable\, long-term stewardship model that strengthens the trail system against future storms. \nHow you can Help\nDonate — this is the most immediate way to support recovery.\nYour contribution helps fund: \n\nTrail repair materials and tools\nSafety equipment\nProfessional services when required\nCoordination of volunteers and recovery projects\n\n→ Donate to support Baron Ranch trail recovery \nBe Part of the Crew\nDuring the rainy season\, trail recovery is ongoing. Feel free to join us for a single morning of volunteering\, or let us know if you want to be a repeat or long-term volunteer. \nIf you’re interested\, fill out the volunteer form\, and we’ll follow up with details. We’ll also share a simple monthly volunteer calendar with consistent workdays to make participation easier. \nTogether\, through donations and sustained stewardship\, we can restore Baron Ranch and ensure these trails remain safe\, resilient\, and accessible for the community. \nThank you for standing with us\, and for believing in the lasting value of trails. \nMark Wilkinson\nExecutive Director\nSanta Barbara County Trails Council \nPS. Join us for a Q&A about Baron Ranch on January 22nd at noon.

SUMMARY:Sunday 4pm - Rocky Peak Trail
By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. \n• Hiking and other outdoor events are inherently dangerous and accidents can happen. SUMMARY:Los Robles Trail via the Los Padres Trail\, Thousand Oaks
DESCRIPTION:This is a relatively easy to moderate 4+ mile loop hike with a 550’ elevation gain. Meet me at 6:30pm at the trailhead\, we will wait five minutes then start. It’s dark – bring your flashlights. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that suits your needs. \nWe start with a short walk through a forest of oak trees that canopy the trail with wooden bridges and a babbling creek. The forest fades into a canyon of lush vegetation and a single trail that ascends to the Los Robles Trail junction\, this is the toughest part of the hike with a steady incline of about 250 feet. \nAt the junction the trail opens into a fire road\, we’ll take a right and continue to climb with an elevation of another 150 feet or so that will level out near the top. At the junction\, we will turn right and then another right onto a scenic route that leads to the benches at the top. We will take a short break and enjoy breathtaking views of Conejo valley. \nWe will then descend down into the canyon and into a lush trail through a second forest of oak trees that ends at Greenmeadow Ave. From here\, we will walk on the sidewalk to the trailhead where we started. \nChecklist \n\nPlease review: Ventura County SARS 10 Essentials\nBring your flashlights / headlamps.\nBring a minimum one liter of water\, snacks\, hat\, poles if you need them\, sunscreen.\nWear good hiking shoes or boots\, dress accordingly and be prepared for cooler weather.\nI recommend wearing a whistle.\nPesky insects? bring bug spray.\n\nOther details \n\nTrail: Combination of a single-track and fire road\nDifficulty: Fit beginner\nDogs: On a leash per state law\nRestrooms/water fountain: No\nParking: Free in street at the trailhead\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\n\nAddress / Google Coordinates \n\nAddress: 15 Los Padres Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA\nGoogle coordinates: 34.172366\, -118.876906\nClick here to view the Google map\n\nDriving Directions \n\nFrom the 101\, take the Moorpark Road exit and go south.
