SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista Hidden Pond Hike - Intermediate Hike - 9:00 AM Start
DESCRIPTION:We will meet near the bathrooms in the parking lot. We will hike down Sycamore Canyon and then take Ranch Center Road to the Hidden Pond trail. From there\, we will take Hidden Pond trail and hopefully we will see a little water in the pond. After stopping at the pond for a brief break we will return to the cars. We will take Ranch Center Road to Sycamore Canyon Road and (unfortunately) up the asphalt to Satwiwa\, the RSV parking lot\, and our cars. \nThis out and back hike will be 7.5 miles with 1300 feet of elevation gain. \nFrom Steve J’s January\, 2019 hike description:\nLocal ranching history in the western Santa Monica Mountains (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Monica_Mountains) began in 1803 when former soldiers Jose Polanco and Ignacio Rodriquez were granted Rancho El Conejo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rancho_El_Conejo) by the King of Spain. \nHidden Pond in Dry Times:\nTen years before the Danielsons appeared on the scene\, wealthy petroleum geologist Carl Beal purchased the northern section of the old rancho in 1936 and christened the area Rancho Sierra Vista. Beal explored the ranch for water and developed a system of dams\, wells\, springs\, and reservoirs that provided the water for a variety of agricultural products and horses. He was the person responsible for building 25 miles of roads and 18 wells feeding the 14 miles of steel pipe that is seen alongside today’s trails. \nHidden Pond was used store water for the staff and livestock of the ranch. The network of pipes leads up to the pond from the house and other areas in Point Mugu State Park and SMMNRA. The pond is at a high point in the hills\, providing gravity-fed water to outlying areas\, but requiring that water be pumped uphill to the pond during wetter times. The ruins of the pumps and other equipment can be seen nearby at the ranch ruins at the west end of Ranch Center Road. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. Drive to the end\, and park near the restroom facilities. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Mr. Toad's Wild(wood) Ride - A Gentler Hike - 8:30AM
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve ever read “Wind in the Willows” you’ll know just how much fooling around in beautiful creeks and rivers plays a part in the story of Mr. Toad and his friends. \nThis hike will follow the various forks of the Arroyo Conejo and Indian Creeks around Wildwood Park. The creeks have been flowing well\, with lots of water falling over Paradise Falls. We’ll scootch through a tiny cave\, and see a nice variety of wildflowers. We’ll also see the Lynnmere Loop trail\, but from across the arroyo. \nWe will start at the parking lot at Canna Street and Timberwood Avenue (see map)\, and skirt the soccer fields and walk through a tunnel to get into Wildwood Park. We’ll do a big lazy figure 8 loop along the creekside trails\, and wind back at the cars about 5 miles / 600 ft. later. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Poppies!
DESCRIPTION:The poppies and other flowers are abundant at what we often refer to as the Westlake YMCA – officially at the Westlake Village Community Park. We will head up into the hills west of Lindero Canyon Road via the Wishbone Trail and on to the Bowfield Trail. If the heat doesn’t wipe us out\, we’ll do a full 6 miles roundtrip from the parking lot to Bowfield Street…giving us a good climb at both the start and the middle of the hike. If it’s too brutal\, we’ll turn around to make it a 5 mile hike. We will venture off the groomed trail onto a use trail into fields of poppies…it’s worth it\, trust me. \nThis route is about 6 miles with an elevation gain of about 1600’ (guessing here as I patch together some different device readings.) \nI hiked the route twice in the last two weeks and the poppies were spectacular. Keep your fingers crossed that the heat hasn’t changed that! \nBring lots of water and whatever you need to stay cool. The trail is exposed. \nDIRECTIONS: Find the trailhead by exiting 101 at Lindero Canyon\, and go north to Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Turn left\, and immediately turn slightly right\, and uphill\, to the community park high above TO Boulevard. At the top\, turn left\, and drive to the far left (west) end of the ball fields.\nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike with the group\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Then\, we will turn around right before a steep downhill section with sharp switchbacks (prior to where the trail crosses a private road) and head back to our cars. \nThis hike will be about 5-6 miles In/Out with approximately 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY
Please review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.
Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:
• Don’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.
• Plan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.
DISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY
The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries.
