SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy\, Reagan Library and a Six-Planet Lineup in Simi Valley
DESCRIPTION:This is a relatively easy to moderate 4.8-mile out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of ‘800. \nBring your binoculars or telescope because we’re in for a treat as Mercury\, Venus\, Saturn\, Jupiter\, Uranus\, and Neptune will line up along the western horizon at dusk. FYI\, the almost full moon and possible cloudy skies may impede the viewing but it’s still a wonderful hike. \nSunset is at 5:50pm and dusk about 6:15. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the listed end time is only an estimate. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that best suits your needs. \nMeet me at Donut Delight\, on the corner of Madera and Royal\, at 4:50pm. We will begin promptly at 5:00pm. \nFrom the donut shop\, we will cross over Madera and walk a short distance through the neighborhood to the trailhead. We will hike a series of about 20 switchbacks for 1.5 miles to the cross at the top. This is a steady climb along the face of the hill\, always in full view of Simi Valley. At the top are panoramic views of Simi Valley\, Moorpark\, the Simi Hills\, Santa Susana/Santa Monica Mountains\, and the Reagan Library. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.6 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nHardest option: 5 miles\, 1200′ gain\, Intermediate \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.8 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock. Those that want the hardest option\, continue for another 0.5 miles and 250′ gain to the end of the trail. Head back down the same way to the social event spot. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles (1.5 mi for easy option\, 5.0 mi for hardest option)\nGain: 950′ (400′ for easy option\, 1200′ for hardest option)\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate (Fit Beginer for easy option\, Intermediate for hardest option)\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). Thank you Jimbo \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. SUMMARY:Ventura Land Trust Trail\, Ventura CA
DESCRIPTION:Ventura Land Trust has opened up a new trail in Ventura\, just above the high school where the trail work has been going on for four years and it’s finally open. The hike is similar to the Ray Miller Trail\, i.e. It is 6 miles out and back. Right now it is a beautiful hike with lots of wildflowers and the views are beautiful. I could not find any limitation on number of attendees\, but another leader usually limits it to 10 people so I am limiting it to 15 until we learn more. We start off at the parking lot at the end of Hall Canyon Road and hike up to the communication tower and then back. \nTake the 101 Ventura and exit Seward. Go north (away from the ocean). Go past Thompson and Main St. to Poli. Take a left on Poli and almost immediately make a sharp right turn onto Hall Canyon Road. SUMMARY:Sherwood Forest/Los Robles Scenic Loop - Gentler but NOT a beginner hike
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll hike about 6 miles with 1100’ of total elevation gain\, spread out nicely\, with a little bonus loop through Oak Creek Canyon. This is a longer route than our typical gentler friendly option. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. After a short street walk to get to the trailhead\, we’ll hike along Los Padres Trail through Sherwood Forest- a wooded patch shaded by huge oak trees. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Flores Peak
DESCRIPTION:This week: Rattlesnake to Flores Peak. We’ll hike up Rattlesnake to the Meadow where we’ll turn RIGHT up to Gibraltar Road. The hike to the road is 13% on average\, but does have some brief 20%+ sections. Once we hit the road we’ll turn LEFT and hike the road for about a third of a mile to the Gibraltar Rock outcropping which will be on our left. On the right is a parking area where the final ascent to Flores Peak begins. This ascent includes some use of hands and is quite tight in spots\, which adds to the fun. Up top there is a rock garden with many picturesque spots and a great view of the city below\, day or night. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possibly wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. DESCRIPTION:5:45 PM START TIME – WEDNESDAY NIGHT – No Rain This Week!!!\nI’ve been get too much couch time lately and need to get my tuckus moving\, so here we go… \nThis is kind of my “go to” hike\, it’s on my way home\, it’s not too long and the views can be spectacular! \nThis is a great weeknight hike\, not too hard nor too easy – I would say it’s “Just Right”! \nAlthough not a true beginner’s hike\, the gain is spread out evenly over the whole climb which makes it fall on the easier end of the intermediate scale (while still being a good workout). There is a great picnic table at the top which makes it perfect place to do a little socializing during these crazy times! . We will try to limit this time to about 15-20 minutes max. so we can get back down at a decent hour (I’m shooting for around 7:30ish)\, so I can grab some afterward…it is during of the week after all! \nIt can also get a bit chilly up there\, even during the warmest weather\, so if you get cold easily bring a jacket\, hat\, gloves\, blanket or other suitable warming device. \nDirections: From the 101 take the Ventu Park exit and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn…um…left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so let’s try to be somewhat restrained. SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop - Easy Intermediate with easier option
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain\nEasier Option\, 3.5 miles\, 460′ gain \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions. I may put down white powder lines so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road through a tunnel and turn right on to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll follow for about 1/4 mile\, and then go left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the trail head parking lot. We’ll regroup. \nThose that want the easier option will cross the parking lot and take main trail (Mesa trail) straight for 1 mile\, turning right at the Lizard Rock trail\, and following it up to Lizard Rock. \nThe rest of us will continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nFinally\, we’ll head along the ridge of Lizard Rock and then down towards the Mesa Trail fire road. We’ll make a left\, and take it all the way back to the main parking lot. Then we’ll cross the lot and take the steps at the far end of the lot down\, and return on the trail we started on\, back to the tunnel and then our cars. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa trail loops hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:“Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center. The Ranch Overlook Trail extends from just west of the culture center to the Palomino Trail in the Rancho Potrero Open Space. \nhttps://www.conejovalleyguide.com/dosomethingblog/ranch-overlook-trail-in-rancho-sierra-vistasatwiwa-in-newbury-park \nThis will be an 8-figure hike. We will start from the parking lot and continue to the Ranch Overlook Trail as we turn left at the juncture of Sycamore Canyon Fire Road. The east trail is moderately flat and you will see bluffs to the west leading to a moderate hill. At the peak\, you’ll have awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route\, as well as towards Boney. We will continue hiking the Satwiwa Loop Trail on the other side when we return to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road and head back to the car. \nThis is about 5-6 miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000’ \nDirections:\nExit 101 at Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Go west for 5.5 miles\, and turn left\, under the Rancho Sierra Vista arch\, into the National Park. DESCRIPTION:Sooth your SuperBowl disappointment or temper your Valentines Day exuberation with a hike up the Rocky Peak trail Sunday afternoon.\nPic is Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 285′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nWe enter the Los Padres trail through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and continue climbing up. We’ll come to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll come to a split off to the right. We’ll take this split and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to the “Giants Picnic Table”\, which I call that because its parts are super thick. \nWe’ll stop for a social event and share snacks and drinks for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nEasy Option: In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\, easy option 2.4 miles.\nGain: 600′\, each option 285′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as a link on this line. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK). \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, or\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or\, scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. SUMMARY:Anza Trail Hike Through Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:Join the Trails Council for a five-mile living heritage trail hike from Rincon Beach County Park to Santa Claus Lane on February 22\, 2026.\nWalk in the footsteps of history as you follow ancient Chumash trading routes later traveled by the Anza expedition. In 1775–1776\, Juan Bautista de Anza led 240 migrants—including families with women and children—northward toward the San Francisco Bay Area and camped near present-day Rincon Point at a site known to the expedition as La Rinconada\, in proximity to the established Chumash village of Mishopshnow\, within an area the expedition referred to as La Carpintería; a journey now observed as a National Historic Trail. \nThe Anza expedition arrived at Rincon Point on February 24\, 1776—almost exactly 250 years before this commemorative hike. Father Pedro Font’s diary brings the scene to life: a stunning coastal landscape\, whale spouts rising offshore\, and the remarkable Chumash people whose masterful craftsmanship\, maritime prowess\, and vibrant community left him awestruck. \nWe will meet at Rincon Beach County Park at 10 am and walk five miles to Santa Claus Lane\, arriving at about 1 pm. The route will generally be flat\, but it includes a steep section. Participants will need to arrange their own shuttle by leaving a car near the destination and driving another to the starting point at Rincon Beach County Park. Carpooling is encouraged.

So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. The hike will be on asphalt only and we will be limited to about 400 feet elevation gain. Hopefully\, we will get in about 5-6 miles by making a big loop to the pier then back to the cars. Bring money or credit card\, so we can stop on the pier for lunch. \nThis hike will start at the Museum of Ventura County parking lot. We will then cross Main Street and take the stairs up to Poli Street where we can connect to Brakey Road (This will be safer than Ferro as no cars are allowed) and hike up to the top of the hill to the Sierra Cross at Grant Park. From there we will come down Summit Drive to N Kalorama Street\, which will take us to E Front Street and across the bridge to the beach\, where we will connect to the pier. We’ll travel to exotic locations with waterfalls\, fire lookouts\, and unusual botany or geology. Places such as Dry Lakes Ridge\, Thorn Point\, and Matilija Falls. All places that made his knees hurt\, but were worth the adventure. \nPerry has worked in radio for nearly 50 years. During that time he worked for several radio stations throughout California\, and for more than a decade his radio show was syndicated across the country and around the world. In July 2017\, he joined the Ojai Valley News as a full-time writer and reporter\, and has written a number of articles about the local trails and hikes\, while continuing to produce news content for radio. Perry has been hiking our local trails for more than 35 years. Recently\, his big project has been building a replica of the Wheeler Gorge Post Office\, which stood for more than 80 years before burning in the Thomas Fire. DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate.\nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. Side streets such as Pinehill or Greenwood are good to park. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). It’s also a good option when it’s very hot out\, because this is one of the cooler areas where we hike\, half shaded\, and most of the incline is on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the right side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hour before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections\n4161 Potrero Rd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reino. It is that name if you go right. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. SUMMARY:Wildwood Park Potluck Hike - Las Flores
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner – 4 miles\, 600′ gain\nThe gain is well distributed\, with half being on the return. \nWe start at the Las Flores trailhead where Las Flores dead-ends at Wildwood Park\, and head west. After 1/3 mile\, the trail becomes Wildwood Canyon Trail. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There will be several tables. \nThis is a potluck picnic. Please bring some food and drinks to share.\nIf your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks and the Pacific Crest Trail
DESCRIPTION:Let’s burn off those Valentine Day chocolates on one of my favorite trails at Vasquez Rocks. This is a moderate 5-mile hike with an elevation gain of about 554’. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that best suits your needs. Also\, please review the disclaimer below. \nMeet me at the visitor center at 11:45-12:00. We will hang out at the center for about 20 minutes before starting. My estimated start time is 12:20. They have very nice exhibits and restrooms. If there are no parking spots available at the visitor’s center\, keep driving down to the dirt parking lots\, you’ll find more room there. \nFrom the visitor’s center we will make our way west and hike above the valley. We will have views of Vasquez Rocks from another perspective than what we typically see in photos. Eventually we’ll make our way to the junction and turn right onto the PCT trail. We’ll hike along the creek\, into the canyons and take a break at the caves (it’s pretty). Then we’ll continue through the wildlife tunnel (directly below Highway 14) and turn around. We won’t be able to walk through the tunnel if there’s too much water. \nOn our way back through the canyon\, we will turn right at the junction\, continue along the PCT\, make our way to the famous Vasquez rocks\, explore and possibly climb to the top. I will point out where Captain Kirk and the Gorn stood (a perfect spot for a group picture).
