SUMMARY:A Trail of Two Ranchos
DESCRIPTION:On this one Chuck Dickens will be our invisible leader. We’ll do a loop around two Ranchos: Rancho Sierra Vista and Rancho Potrero. \nWe’ll begin and end on the Satwiwa Loop Trail. Rancho Potrero abuts the west end of the loop and includes grasslands\, coastal sage scrub with the Conejo rock plant association\, and riparian habitats. On clear days\, the coastline and Channel Islands can be seen from the old Olympia Farms site\, which is located mid-elevation on the property and still has graded pad areas from the previous use. \nHike is about 6 miles with 900 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. \nDirections\nHead to the southern terminus of Wendy Dr and park on Potrero Rd. We meet at the Wendy Trail Head

SUMMARY:Belated Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:An HWD Classic! \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \n  \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Towsley Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This outing follows a counterclockwise lollipop loop that blends wide canyon roads\, singletrack\, and ridgeline views for a well-rounded\, moderate hike. \nWe’ll start from the Rivendale Ranch trailhead and head up Towsley Canyon Road\, an easy\, gradual warm-up through oak-studded canyon bottoms. From there\, we’ll turn onto the Towsley View Loop Trail\, climbing steadily through shaded sections\, a narrow sandstone gorge\, and classic chaparral slopes. Going counterclockwise keeps the ascent manageable and rewards us with expanding views of the Santa Clarita Valley as we gain elevation. The high point along the ridge sits around 2\,400 feet\, offering wide-open vistas and a good place to pause and take it in. \nFrom the ridge\, we’ll descend into Wiley Canyon\, then complete the loop using the Canyon View Loop Trail\, which rolls gently back toward the trailhead without retracing our steps. The full route is about 5.4 miles with roughly 1\,100–1\,400 feet of elevation gain\, \nEcologically\, this hike is a snapshot of Southern California chaparral. Along the way you’ll see coast live oaks\, sycamores\, sage\, buckwheat\, chamise\, manzanita\, and scrub oak. In winter and spring\, wildflowers like mustard\, lupine\, and poppies often add color to the hillsides. Wildlife commonly spotted here includes lizards\, ground squirrels\, rabbits\, mule deer\, and a wide variety of birds such as red-tailed hawks\, vultures\, quail\, and scrub jays. Rattlesnakes do live in the area\, so we’ll stay alert\, especially in warmer weather. \nOverall\, this is a scenic\, rewarding hike that feels wild without being remote—perfect for experiencing Towsley Canyon at its best. \nHike is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nPull into Towsley Canyon Park and find a parking spot. We’ll meet in the first lot after gate. See pin in Google Map link

SUMMARY:🚶‍♂️‍➡️Easy Hike: The New Paramount Ranch (from Reagan Ranch)
DESCRIPTION:We were here last May and found a new old west is rising! Let’s check out the continiuing rebuilding progress of the famous Old Western Town at Paramount Ranch with this easy hike. \n📽️As many of you know\, until the Woolsey fire\, this was the filming site of hundreds of movies and TV shows since 1927. The Woolsey Fire destroyed the original Western Town buildings. Only two structures survived: a white chapel built for “Westworld” and a train depot built for “Dr. Quinn\, Medicine Woman.” \n🏎️The ranch site also was also the home of a world class race track in the late 50s. \nThe National Park Service is building a new Paramount Ranch set to house four buildings on the footprint of the historic structures\, and all will be built with an eye toward wildfire safety. Plans for the new structures include a prop shed\, barn\, restrooms and a large pavilion\, which all could be used for events and as “the backbone for future filming.” The chapel and depot will remain in place. \nLet’s check out the progress! \n👉Hike will be about 4 miles with 400′ of total ascent and rated EASY. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. Depending on group\, we can easily add more elevation. \nGetting There\nIn order to respect the NPS parking limits we will be parking and meeting at the old Reagan Ranch in Malibu Creek State Park and hiking into Paramount Ranch. See Google map.

SUMMARY:Fryman - Franklin Foray
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE\nBeginning the hike at the U-Vanu Trail on Viewcrest Drive immediately gives the outing a quieter\, more residential feel than the main Fryman Canyon entrances. The trail slips gently away from the street and begins a steady climb through chaparral and low brush\, with filtered views back toward the San Fernando Valley opening up as you gain elevation. It feels calm and local at first\, as if you’ve discovered a back door into the hills. \nAs the U-Vanu Trail rises\, the terrain becomes more open and sunlit\, and the path connects naturally into the broader Fryman Canyon trail network. Here the hike takes on a more energetic rhythm\, with wider fire roads\, airy ridgelines\, and expansive views that contrast with the tucked-away feel of the trailhead. This section delivers the classic Fryman experience: steady climbing\, open skies\, and a sense of space above the city. \nNear Mulholland Drive\, the route crests the ridge and transitions toward Franklin Canyon. Crossing over\, the landscape changes quickly—oak and sycamore trees replace scrub\, the trail narrows\, and the air cools as you descend. The shift from Fryman’s exposed hills to Franklin’s shaded canyon feels dramatic and refreshing. \nA brief stop at the TreePeople exhibits adds a thoughtful pause\, offering insight into local ecology\, water conservation\, and the relationship between these canyons and Los Angeles. Deeper in Franklin Canyon\, the trail meanders past creek beds and historic stone features to the Franklin Canyon Reservoir\, where wildlife and still water create a peaceful midpoint. \nThe hike concludes by climbing back out of Franklin Canyon and returning to Fryman Canyon\, eventually reconnecting with the U-Vanu route. The final stretch restores the views and sunlight\, completing a satisfying loop that blends neighborhood access\, open ridgelines\, shaded canyon trails\, and a full-circle return to Viewcrest Drive. \nHike is about 5.5 miles with appx 1\,300 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nPark in the Wilacre Park parking lot (this is the main lot and trail head). Overflow parking can be found on Laurel Terrace Dr (west of Laurel Canyon Blvd)\,

Lots of local movie and development history here. \nThe Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve—still fondly known as Ahmanson Ranch—offers some of the most inviting and varied hiking in the western San Fernando Valley\, with rolling grasslands\, oak-dotted hills\, and wide-open views that change beautifully with the seasons. Be on the lookout for red-tailed hawks\, meadowlarks\, quail\, coyotes\, and the occasional bobcat. \n🎬Our hike begins in Gates Canyon where the trail climbs steadily through a narrow oak-lined canyon bringing us to Lasky Mesa. Thanks to its wide-open grasslands and unobstructed horizon\, Lasky Mesa has one of the richest movie histories in the Los Angeles area\, including the burning of Atlanta scene in Gone With the Wind (1939). Over the decades the area continued to appear in films\, TV shows\, and commercials that needed a natural\, undeveloped backdrop. \n👩‍🌾From here we’ll loop over to the Ahmanson Ranch House for a short break. Wealthy financier and landholder\, George E. Barrett purchased the land in the 1930s. Around 1938\, Barrett built the ranch house that still stands today. Under Barrett’s ownership\, the ranch functioned as a horse- and stock-farm and occasional getaway — but it was also connected to the area’s film-ranch history. \n💰It’s called Ahmanson Ranch because the land was purchased in 1963 by Home Savings of America\, the banking institution founded and led by philanthropist Howard F. Ahmanson\, Sr.\, for a large scale residential development. Those development plans were ultimately halted — and the property was preserved as public open space in 2003. \n📈After the ranch visit we’ll descend into eastern Las Virgenes Canyon and then back up to Gates Canyon trail to complete a 9 mile loop with 1\,600 feet total ascent. Hike is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nPark in Gates Canyon Park and meet at far end by tennis courts. There is some street parking in front of park.

SUMMARY:🥾Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is a workout with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \nHike is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead parking lot at\n5721 Bonsall Dr · Malibu\, CA \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:💦Chasing Waterfalls
DESCRIPTION:Capturing all the beauty of Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks — dramatic views\, peaceful canyons\, and two waterfalls — this loop is a group favorite. It’s about five miles long and covers the park’s most scenic highlights\, including Lizard Rock\, Skunk Hollow\, the quiet Eagle Point Trail\, and finally Paradise Falls\, before returning by way of the tranquil Indian Creek Trail. \nWe’ll start down the street from the main Wildwood trailhead. Instead of heading out on the busy Mesa Trail\, we’ll hook up with the Stagecoach Bluff Trail. This single-track path runs parallel to the canyon edge and immediately feels more rugged and natural. We’ll meander through sage scrub and chaparral\, catching glimpses into Wildwood Canyon below. Hawks often circle overhead\, and in spring\, wildflowers brighten the slopes. The trail gently climbs westward until it meets Lizard Rock Trail\, where we turn for the final ascent to the ridge. \nThe climb to Lizard Rock is short but scenic\, winding through sandstone outcrops that frame sweeping views of Thousand Oaks\, Mountclef Ridge\, and the Santa Monica Mountains. At the top\, Lizard Rock — a large sandstone formation resembling its namesake — offers one of the best panoramas in the park. It’s a perfect place for us to rest\, take in the view\, and appreciate how close this wild landscape sits to the city below. \nFrom Lizard Rock\, we continue down the trail as it descends toward Skunk Hollow\, a quiet\, grassy meadow nestled in the canyon. Despite its name\, Skunk Hollow is lovely and peaceful — often dotted with wildflowers and shaded by oaks. From here we hop onto the Eagle Point Trail\, one of Wildwood’s lesser-traveled paths. This stretch feels remote\, winding along the park’s northern slopes with long\, open views across Wildwood Mesa. We climb gently\, then begin a steady descent into Wildwood Canyon. \nAt the end of Eagle Point Trail\, we connect to the main Paradise Falls Trail\, which leads to the park’s most famous landmark. The 40-foot waterfall tumbles year-round into a shaded pool\, making it an irresistible stop for another snack or photo break. \nOn our return to the cars we follow the Indian Creek Trail\, a quieter alternative to the main canyon route. This trail traces the creek upstream through oak woodlands. Along the way\, we’ll pass Little Falls\, a smaller\, charming cascade tucked into the canyon wall. From there\, the trail climbs gradually out of the canyon and rejoins the mesa above\, where an easy stroll across the ball fields brings us back to our starting point. \nThis loop showcases the best of Wildwood — sweeping vistas\, hidden hollows\, and the soothing sound of waterfalls — all in a moderate five-mile hike with about 600 feet of elevation gain.

SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Another Palisades favorite. Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout. Our “NO FIREROAD RULE” will be in effect. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HWD HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers.
