SUMMARY:White Mountain Hike with Ella - A Mellow 5-Peaks Summit!
DESCRIPTION:Tick off another 5-Peaks Challenge summit with a mellow hike up White Mountain!\nJoin us for a late-morning hike and picnic at White Mountain and the Rock Garden. The Rock Garden is a hidden boulder field perched on a ridge overlooking Santa Barbara. If the day is clear and the marine layer is minimal\, we will be gifted grand views of the ocean and the Channel Islands. It can be reached by a short hike of less than a mile from the top of Gibraltar Road. This will give us plenty of time to explore and wander amongst the boulders and beautiful pine trees. Please bring a snack. We’ll find the boulder with the best view to climb on top of to enjoy a picnic lunch.\nSign Up for the 5 Peaks Challenge Here: https://bit.ly/5PeaksChallenge\nDetails:\nDistance ~2 mi\nAscent – 500 ft\nDifficulty – Easy\nTrailhead: Camino Cielo Rd just above Gibraltar Road\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/srM43kGjfBeQe1qVA\nCoordinates: 34°29’27.9″N 119°41’24.7″W\nFrom Santa Barbara\, I recommend taking Gibraltar Road Highway into Los Padres National Forest. Continue for several miles and park on Camino Cielo just above Gibraltar Road. (Use the attached map for precise guidance.) I would drive the way shown on this map.\nThe group will meet at the trailhead at 9:45 AM for a prompt start at 10 AM. Please arrive on time to respect everyone’s schedule. Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes\, and dress in layers for changing temperatures. Most of the trail is exposed to the sun\, so bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen. Bring a snack and 1-2L of water.\nNote: Rain or low attendance cancels the hike.\nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. By participating in this hike\, you agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from this activity. Neither the group’s leaders nor any third party will be held liable for any injury\, loss\, or damage. Participation is based on an “at will” basis.\nPLEASE DONATE\nIf you would like to support the maintenance of the trails\, please consider donating to the Trails Council’s trail fund: https://sbtrails.org/our-work/donations/

SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Montecito Peak
DESCRIPTION:This week: Montecito Peak. Meet at Big 5 at 6:00p for the shuttle to Trailhead. We’ll climb up Cold Springs Ridge Trail (optional Boy Scout bypass and the narrow trail to the little peak there). From there we’ll ascend Cold Springs trail until we reach the steep\, kitty litter trail up to Montecito Peak. Return the main Cold Springs trail to trailhead\, stepping through water passages in the dark. Alternately we may decide up the creek\, down the ridge. Game day decision.\nDistance – 6.59 mi\nAscent – 2511ft\nWater crossings – YES (Step over)\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – YES (push aside\, not climb through)\nMaximum Grade – >25%\nOverall Effort – Hard\nStrava Effort – 2.2x \nCarpool Spot: Big 5 North lot at 6:00\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/pkfrwbwnWmEP5zC88 \nTrailhead: Cold Springs Trailhead 6:30 (but please do carpool!)\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/y6VQzM5kerD7VFdz9 \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3276034628776663106 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-895-5655. \nAbout Wednesday Evening Hike series\nWe will meet at 6:30p at the trailhead unless otherwise noted for that week. We sometimes carpool to trails up to 45 minutes away. We attempt to vary the trails selecting amongst those that are open and in hike-worthy condition. We hike the front country\, the backside of the front range and occasionally adventure even further. Hikes are typically in the 6-9 mile range with 1500-3000 ft of total ascent. Occasionally we’ll mix in a harder hike where returns can be very late. These hikes are meant for those with some hiking experience and moderate athletic condition. The pace varies and larger groups usually split\, but we will re-group at intersections and stick together where the path is ‘iffy’. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possible wet. Headlamp and/or flashlight required. Bring a water resistant jacket for rain/gloom or just cold air which is frequent at altitude. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. Bug spray is a good idea as bugs are very active at dusk (better to have and not need.) Some folks bring hiking poles. I recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. By being a member of this group\, you hereby agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from any group functions. You agree that you nor any third party will hold any of the group’s leaders liable for any injury\, loss\, or damage to your own self or property arising directly or as a consequence of a group activity. You also agree that your membership of this group is based on an “at will” basis.

SUMMARY:Anza Trail Hike Through Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:Join the Trails Council for a five-mile living heritage trail hike from Rincon Beach County Park to Santa Claus Lane on February 22\, 2026.\nWalk in the footsteps of history as you follow ancient Chumash trading routes later traveled by the Anza expedition. In 1775–1776\, Juan Bautista de Anza led 240 migrants—including families with women and children—northward toward the San Francisco Bay Area and camped near present-day Rincon Point at a site known to the expedition as La Rinconada\, in proximity to the established Chumash village of Mishopshnow\, within an area the expedition referred to as La Carpintería; a journey now observed as a National Historic Trail. \nThe Anza expedition arrived at Rincon Point on February 24\, 1776—almost exactly 250 years before this commemorative hike. Father Pedro Font’s diary brings the scene to life: a stunning coastal landscape\, whale spouts rising offshore\, and the remarkable Chumash people whose masterful craftsmanship\, maritime prowess\, and vibrant community left him awestruck. \nWe will meet at Rincon Beach County Park at 10 am and walk five miles to Santa Claus Lane\, arriving at about 1 pm. The route will generally be flat\, but it includes a steep section. Participants will need to arrange their own shuttle by leaving a car near the destination and driving another to the starting point at Rincon Beach County Park. Carpooling is encouraged.

Turn right toward Gaviota Park Boundary\, then take another quick right onto Gaviota Park Boundary. Drive about 0.3 miles to the Gaviota Peak Trailhead. The State Park requires a $2 parking fee\, so bring cash. \nThe group will meet at the Gaviota Peak Trailhead at 8:15 AM for a prompt start at 8:30 AM. Please be on time to respect everyone’s schedule. Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes\, and bring comfortable clothes for varying temperatures. By participating in this hike\, you agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from this activity. Neither the group’s leaders nor any third party will be held liable for any injury\, loss\, or damage. Participation is based on an “at will” basis.

SUMMARY:Trail Talks: Far-flung hikes of the Los Padres with Perry Van Houten
DESCRIPTION:Trail Talks: Far-flung hikes of the Los Padres with Perry Van Houten \nThursday\, February 19\, 6:30pm\nFaulkner Gallery – Santa Barbara Public Library\n40 East Anapamu St.\, Santa Barbara\, CA \nJoin local author Perry Van Houten as he shares about destinations in the mountains past Ojai that aren’t so easy to get to. We’ll travel to exotic locations with waterfalls\, fire lookouts\, and unusual botany or geology. Places such as Dry Lakes Ridge\, Thorn Point\, and Matilija Falls. All places that made his knees hurt\, but were worth the adventure. \nPerry has worked in radio for nearly 50 years. During that time he worked for several radio stations throughout California\, and for more than a decade his radio show was syndicated across the country and around the world. In July 2017\, he joined the Ojai Valley News as a full-time writer and reporter\, and has written a number of articles about the local trails and hikes\, while continuing to produce news content for radio. Perry has been hiking our local trails for more than 35 years. Recently\, his big project has been building a replica of the Wheeler Gorge Post Office\, which stood for more than 80 years before burning in the Thomas Fire. Today\, the rebuilt “USA’s Smallest Post Office” (as listed by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!) can be seen at the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center\, about 8 miles north of Ojai on SR-33. \nThis free presentation is part of the Trail Talks series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. \nThe next talk in the series is Thursday\, March 19\, Wildflowers and other Wonders of the Santa Barbara and Ojai Mountains with James Wapotich

SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Mission Ridge
DESCRIPTION:This week: Mission Ridge (Tunnel Trail). This route ascends Tunnel trail for 2 miles then heads up the spine of Mission Ridge. Pause for refreshments and great city light views halfway along the Ridge. The Ridge trail follows the spine for 3/4 mile and drops off on an Edison access road. After a brief side trip to see the moonlit maze (picture above)\, the route follows the Edison road all the way back to the Trailhead and parked cars.\nDistance – 5.4 mi\nAscent – 1779ft\nWater crossings – NO\nRock scrambling – SOME\nBush whacking – SOME\nMaximum Grade – >25%\nStrava Effort – 1.7x \nTrailhead: Tunnel Trailhead\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/beKanekLtRhGSJs29 \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3285753744737467558 \nHike Leader this week will be Kevin Hanrahan. SUMMARY:Storm Damage at Baron Ranch Trails
DESCRIPTION:Dear Happy Hiker\, \nJust weeks ago\, Baron Ranch was a place of strength\, challenge\, and beauty. In early December\, runners traversed its ridgelines and canyons during the Island View Endurance Run\, taking in sweeping views of the Gaviota Coast and Channel Islands. Today\, the landscape tells a very different story. \nAccording to the National Weather Service\, the heaviest rainfall fell along the Gaviota Coast and surrounding foothills over a three-day period ending at midnight on Monday\, January 5. Rainfall exceeded eight inches in the mountains above the Baron Ranch trail system. The storms triggered widespread landslides\, rockfalls\, and erosion across the network. The photos in the image gallery show washed-out tread\, collapsed trail edges\, and deeply scarred terrain that was recently stable and well-traveled. \nImage Gallery →\nMap →\nDonate → \nWhat This Means for the Trails\nSome damage can be addressed by trained volunteers. However\, several slide areas will require professional trail crews\, heavy equipment\, and careful regrading to restore safe public access. \nPast storm events have shown what this work entails. Repairing a single trail has cost more than $25\,000 and required hundreds of volunteer hours\, on top of approximately $15\,000 in general trail upkeep each year. With 9 miles of trail impacted\, the scope of recovery at Baron Ranch is significant. \nFor safety reasons\, Baron Ranch Trails are closed as of January 7. Full repairs are expected to take up to eight weeks. \nOur Goal\nRestore safe public access to Baron Ranch trails while building a sustainable\, long-term stewardship model that strengthens the trail system against future storms. \nHow you can Help\nDonate — this is the most immediate way to support recovery.\nYour contribution helps fund: \n\nTrail repair materials and tools\nSafety equipment\nProfessional services when required\nCoordination of volunteers and recovery projects\n\n→ Donate to support Baron Ranch trail recovery \nBe Part of the Crew\nDuring the rainy season\, trail recovery is ongoing. Feel free to join us for a single morning of volunteering\, or let us know if you want to be a repeat or long-term volunteer. \nIf you’re interested\, fill out the volunteer form\, and we’ll follow up with details. We’ll also share a simple monthly volunteer calendar with consistent workdays to make participation easier. \nTogether\, through donations and sustained stewardship\, we can restore Baron Ranch and ensure these trails remain safe\, resilient\, and accessible for the community. \nThank you for standing with us\, and for believing in the lasting value of trails. \nMark Wilkinson\nExecutive Director\nSanta Barbara County Trails Council \nPS. Join us for a Q&A about Baron Ranch on January 22nd at noon.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Romero Cyn to the top
DESCRIPTION:This week: Romero Canyon. We will be ascending the single track Romero Canyon trail. This route starts up an overgrown road which is fairly steep\, crosses the creek and hits the intersection of the old Romero Road. We’ll hang left and ascend steadily up a single track to the intersection of that same road to re-group if we’ve split on pace. Crossing that road the remainder of the trail climbs to the overlook peak\, which is a little spur just to the left as the trail to the spool crests. We’ll replenish up top and head down the same route. \nDistance – 6.79 mi\nAscent – 2599 ft\nWater crossings – YES\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >25%\nStrava Effort – 2.5x \nTrailhead: Romero Canyon Trail. Please park completely off the asphalt.\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/JPkPbYFytm9hpZTm9 \nCarpool: Big 5 in Five points departs 6:00p\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/sNS6bCn9NBw8Yvyc7 \nStrava link:\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3288367682117299372 \nHike Leader this week will be Carlos Alvarez. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Kevin can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. We recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. SUMMARY:Love the Trails?
DESCRIPTION:Give Back to the Places We Love \nWe all benefit from free access to the incredible network of trails weaving through our coastal mountains\, the Gaviota coastline\, and the Santa Ynez Valley. These trails are a true community treasure—but they are at their best when they are well-loved\, well-used\, and well-cared-for. \nWhile nature provides the views\, it takes hard work and resources to keep our paths safe and accessible. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or just finding your footing\, you can help us pave the way for the future. \nYour donation today goes directly toward: \n\nEssential Maintenance: Clearing brush\, repairing erosion\, and keeping our beloved paths safe.\nNew Construction: expanding our network to explore even more of the spectacular Santa Barbara backcountry.\n\nLet’s ensure these trails remain a treasure for generations to come. \nIf you would like to discuss the future of trails in Santa Barbara County\, join me online on Saturday at 9 am for a Q&A session. \nHappy Trails\,\nMark Wilkinson\nSanta Barbara County Trails Council

This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Wednesday Evening Hike: Cold Springs
DESCRIPTION:This week: Cold Springs – East Fork. Meet at Cold Springs Trailhead on Mountain Drive. This route climbs local favorite Cold Springs Trail passing waterfalls and several iconic waypoints; city overlook\, lone tree\, Montecito Peak and finally the Spool (water tower) at Camino Cielo. We’ll enjoy a snack at the top\, perhaps atop the Spool\, before descending back the same trail. When we arrive back to the overlook\, hopefully with great view of city lights below\, we’ll take the Ridge trail for the final descent back the cars. Expect a late return for this longer hike.\nDistance – 9.21mi\nAscent – 2691ft\nWater crossings – EASY\nRock scrambling – NO\nBush whacking – NO\nMaximum Grade – >15%\nStrava Effort – 2.8x \nCarpool: Big 5 North lot at 6:00pm \nTrailhead: Cold Springs Trailhead\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/bsVjiLdtkqMTYRTSA \nStrava link\nhttps://www.strava.com/routes/3247792500807304194 \nHike Leader this week will be Carlos Alvarez. If you plan to attend please accept on Meetup. For questions\, Carlos can be reached via text at 805-284-8137. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possibly wet. From the parking area near Circle V camp\, we’ll cross the creek a couple places heading steadily upward\, enjoying some great views of Lake Cachuma and the Santa Ynez Valley. It is a steady cardio climb\, and we’ll re-group every mile or so. The trail ends at a Camino Cielo frontage road.
We recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent scratches\, poison oak and ticks. \nWe typically stop at the top\, add a layer for warmth and enjoy a snack. This can be some of the best fun as folks drag up hot tea\, other libations\, and all sorts of baked goods to share. Yum! \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk.
