In early December\, runners traversed its ridgelines and canyons during the Island View Endurance Run\, taking in sweeping views of the Gaviota Coast and Channel Islands. Today\, the landscape tells a very different story. \nAccording to the National Weather Service\, the heaviest rainfall fell along the Gaviota Coast and surrounding foothills over a three-day period ending at midnight on Monday\, January 5. Rainfall exceeded eight inches in the mountains above the Baron Ranch trail system. The storms triggered widespread landslides\, rockfalls\, and erosion across the network. The photos in the image gallery show washed-out tread\, collapsed trail edges\, and deeply scarred terrain that was recently stable and well-traveled. \nImage Gallery →\nMap →\nDonate → \nWhat This Means for the Trails\nSome damage can be addressed by trained volunteers. However\, several slide areas will require professional trail crews\, heavy equipment\, and careful regrading to restore safe public access. \nPast storm events have shown what this work entails. Repairing a single trail has cost more than $25\,000 and required hundreds of volunteer hours\, on top of approximately $15\,000 in general trail upkeep each year. With 9 miles of trail impacted\, the scope of recovery at Baron Ranch is significant. \nFor safety reasons\, Baron Ranch Trails are closed as of January 7. The images will illustrate the many different looks that the seasons and weather conditions present. The images will give the viewer a new perspective and overview of the wonderful wild country that we are so lucky to have in our backyard. The show will also include several comparison views of the areas affected by the fires of the last several decades. \nBill’s life passion is photographing the California landscape from the ground and the air. Ready to take off at a moment’s notice if the day’s light and skies intrigue him\, Bill’s aerial photography is done from his Cessna 172\, which he keeps at the Santa Barbara airport. Otherwise\, he is in his four-wheel drive Subaru getting off the beaten track! \nBill also specializes in architectural\, commercial illustration\, and fine art photography. His work can be found in the collections of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, Museum of Ventura County\, Carnegie Museum of Oxnard\, Santa Cruz Island Foundation\, University of California Santa Barbara\, Lompoc Valley Hospital\, Cal Poly of San Luis Obispo\, and numerous private collections. Parking at the San Ysidro Trailhead OR meeting at Big 5. This route ascends San Ysidro trail before veering West across the creek to pick up McMenemy Trail. McMenemy traverses the hills above some of the prettiest vistas of Montecito. We’ll turn up and climb Saddle Rock trail which has some beautifully colored rocks (pictured) and lands at the photo-op friendly\, heart-shaped rock art plateau. From there we’ll head toward the catway and West to Hot Springs Hotel and the too-famous hot springs. Since the Solstice is Friday\, we’re dividing Solstice celebration into 2 parts. Part 1: Beautiful sunset views of our cherished town. Part 2: (following week) the easier hike and food/drink extravaganza at Dry Falls. This week we’ll meet at Tunnel Trailhead at 6:30p (please carpool). This route ascends Tunnel trail 1.0mi to Inspiration Point Trail. We’ll follow Inspiration Trail for 0.6mi to the South access trail to Arlington Peak. This segment is about a mile long but ascends 1400ft\, so pretty steep and scrambly. We’ll pause for refreshments up top and take in the views. Arlington Peak affords hikers some of the best views of Santa Barbara. The descent is very steep and requires some use of hands to navigate. We head up the single track to the Waterfall (probably dry right now?). From there we bear right up the steep kitty litter part to the top of the waterfall and ascend the steady incline all the way up to Camino Cielo. This trail has been closed for a few years to repair storm damage so I can’t speak to its condition\, but formerly this was one of the best maintained trails in the front country.
