SUMMARY:Thrilling Tuesday Hike: Whiteface! - 5:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:This is a requested event by several members that I was supposed to schedule last year…sorry for the delay! \nThis is my all time favorite hike in the local area and for about a three year period I hiked it 4-5 times a week. While it is a relatively short hike at around 1 mile each way\, the elevation gain is around 800′.\nI used this hike for my fitness training and still have the unofficial world record at 28:28 round trip…unfortunately today (3/15/26) it took me 35 minutes just to make the assent. The trail conditions have deteriorated over the years and I am a tad older! Which reminds me of what my Dad says\, “The older I get\, the better I use to be!”. One of my favorite songs is also titled “The Older I Get”\, by Alan Jackson. It has a slightly different meaning and one that really resonates with me… \nPLEASE NOTE: No beginners…..\nMust be comfortable hiking a demanding route on a steep ridge and you need to wear lugged shoe soles because its very slippery in some sections.\nWhen you sign up you will automatically go on the wait-list and I will make the decision to move people to “Going”. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/c/7/c/600_453940060.jpeg \nWhiteface is the aptly named white cliff with several trees you see when looking North up Sycamore Dr.\nWhile it is short\, it will definitely give your heart\, lungs and legs a good workout. There are some very steep sections with some rock scrambling (bring gloves if you have sensitive pinkies) and areas of severe drop-offs. So if your afraid of heights this hike is not for you…but believe me the views are worth a little scare! \nWe won’t be lingering too long at the top and we will try to be back at our cars no later than dusk\, which is 7:30 p.m. (The park officially closes at 10:00 p.m.) \nWe will meet in the lower of the two parking areas up near the dog park\, but please don’t bring your dog on the hike! \n• Total mileage: Approx. 2 mi. \n• Elevation gain: 750’+ \n• What to bring: 1-2 liters of water\, energy snacks\, hiking shoes/boots\, gloves for your pinkies and a flashlight just in case. \n• Parking: Lower of the two parking areas nearest to the dog park. \nDriving directions from: E. Simi Valley/S.F. Valley take the 118 Freeway. DESCRIPTION:Gaining a little daylight on the Chumash Feb 26\, 2026. Thank you Jimbo \nThe long winter on the Chumash is coming to a close. At least half of the hike will now be in daylight. By this time Thursday you should have figured out you forgot to set your clocks ahead and no excuses for showing up an hour early will be entertained. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire.\nIt’s mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the ‘slippery’ part just over a mile up\, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012\, but don’t believe whatever he tells you. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Come join us Wednesday\, March 18 for an afternoon/evening workout hike!\nWe start on time at Wildwood Park where there are a ton of trails. We will be veering right at the Santa Rosa Trail/Box Canyon sign and go up a steep incline\, which is about 1 mile to the top. If you are a beginner you could do the hill and then turn around to make it a heart-pounding 2 mile hike. The rest of us will keep going at a good pace as the trail loops around so you can see Santa Rosa Valley/Camarillo and then back to the trailhead in Wildwood. \nDistance: 6.3 miles \nElevation Gain: 1000+ \nDifficulty: Intermediate Hike. If a Beginner tags along they should turn around at the top and not do the loop. Please do not expect us to wait for you. \nDogs: No \nRestrooms: There is a pit toilet at the trailhead \nWater Fountain: no \nParking: Free parking lot just note when the gate closes for the night \nTrail: This is a loop trail unless you just want to do 2 miles up to the ridge and back. \nSunset: 7:05 pm bring flashlight/headlamp or charged phone for a light\, even though you might not need it\, always good to have light just in case. \nWeather: It can always start out warm at this trailhead since there is no shade. \n\nHike may be cancelled a few hours before event due to extreme weather or if less than 2 besides the leader are signed up.\nPlease pay attention to the comments the day of since we are going into a heatwave in the days before the hike.\n\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes and poison oak can be at this trail. Watch what plants you brush up against and be aware that snakes co exist here. \nBring: Flashlight/headlamp\, water and a personal snack. You may want sunscreen/sunglasses or hat starting out and an extra layer in case you get cold on the way back. We can take a 5-10 minute break at the bottom which is a little more than halfway\, and the picnic bench is back! \nBring lots of water I recommend 2-3 liters. DESCRIPTION:This is a moderate 4.25 mile hike with an elevation gain of 750’\, suitable for fit-beginners. \nTuesday is St. Patty’s Day\, so we’re hiking today and celebrating tomorrow! \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the listed end time is only an estimate. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that best suits your needs. \nMeet me at 6:30pm at the trailhead in the farthest parking lot and we’ll start no later than 6:35. \nSunset is at 7:04 and the last light is at 7:28\, don’t forget your flashlights. \nThe hike begins with a 1.3 mile single-track section of the Los Robles system to a junction with a wide fire road\, which we’ll take for about another mile to where it joins the White Horse Canyon Trail. \nWe’ll make our way to the junction that bypasses a steep terrain and follow the trail for a while then begin to ascend up to the top. Don’t get too far ahead of me\, you might miss this junction\, then you’ll be on your own. \nIn one area is a steep section upward\, however\, after a short distance\, we will take a detour with a more gradual incline.\nWe’ll take a break once we reach the bench at the top\, then head back down to the first single-track portion of our hike to the park. \nThere are restrooms located at the opposite end of the trailhead in the first parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Help prepare for the upcoming swimsuit season with a hike up the Rocky Peak trail Sunday afternoon.\nPic is Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos Loop with Optional Snack Share
DESCRIPTION:Daylight Saving time is here and time to start the Friday night hikes.\nBring a head lamp or flash light (cell phone flash light will do). \nJoin me on a moderate five mile loop with a total elevation gain/loss of about 800 ft. \nPlease meet at the Dos Vientos Community Park Tennis Courts near the corner of Rancho Dos Vientos and Borchard Rd.\nAt about the 2 mile mark there is an overlook to the ocean. We will stop at a bench and have a break. Bring snacks to share\nThis hike explores some of the neighborhood trails in the Dos Vientos area of the southwestern Conejo Valley. Although most of this route is on trails and/or dirt utility roads\, there are three street crossings\, and a few minutes on a roadside trail. From high on the trails\, there are outstanding views of the nearby Dos Vientos residential area\, as well as distant vistas including Camarillo\, Thousand Oaks\, surrounding mountains and open space\, a secluded pond\, the Pacific coast\, and two of the Channel Islands. Park at Dos Vientos Community Park at Borchard Road and Via Las Brisas. \nDistance: <5 miles \nElevation Gain: 800 ft \nDifficulty: Intermediate hiker\, no beginners please \nDogs: No \nRestrooms: at the trailhead \nWater Fountain: at the trailhead \nParking: Dos Vientos Community Park Tennis Courts\nTrail: Loop \nSunset: 7:05 PM \nWeather: Extreme heat\, high winds or rain will cancel this hike\nKnown Dangers: Cactus\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, speedy mountain bikers \nBring:\nFlashlight/headlamp and an extra layer\, it can get chilly\, even on a warm day. DESCRIPTION:This is a moderate 4.5 mile hike with an elevation gain of 800’\, suitable for fit-beginners. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the listed end time is only an estimate. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that best suits your needs. \nMeet me at the trailhead (see map in the photo gallery) at 6:00\, we’ll start at 6:05. \nIt is not a difficult hike because the elevation gain is rather mild\, and it’s mostly spread out over the whole area with gradual climbs with a moderately steeper climb coming out of the canyon. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll hike about ½ mile on level ground followed by a steady and gradual 1 mile climb to the junction at the top. Then we will hike a small hill\, take a breather and enjoy the views\, and head down into the canyon. \nComing back\, we will hike out of the canyon to the junction which is a moderately steep climb but doable for beginners. By this time Thursday you should have figured out you forgot to set your clocks ahead and no excuses for showing up an hour early will be entertained. \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period\, and he’ll be leading this event until the Ice Age\, i.e. this hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon to an Abandoned Mining Operation Hike
DESCRIPTION:Time to get back hiking now that the clocks are changing! Join me Wednesday\, March 11 to hike the canyon and then go up to the old Cochina Mine. There should be some lovely green and flowers along the way.\nThis group usually does not hike at a slow pace so please keep that in mind if joining.\nStarting out Las Llajas Canyon Trail is fairly easy but it does become a moderately difficult hike if you decide to hike up to the mine area. As a group we can decide if we are up to going up the hill to the mine or not\, so it will depend on how we feel due to weather\, light etc and if we can stay together. If we go to the mine it might be more like 7 miles. You can always decide to stay in the canyon and do the easy route and we can decide as a group if we want to go a little further. Do note that we won’t wait too long if you are behind a good distance but would keep going.\nThe mine at the top still has some shells and interesting relics! Each time I go I see or learn something different about the place. \nThis hike should probably only take about 2 hours at my pace but allow for 3 just in case! We will take a short break to explore the mine area and then head back the way we came. It will probably be dark on the way back so please make sure you have a light. The hill up to the mine is steep and not for beginners\, The canyon portion is easy and scenic but please wear shoes appropriate for hiking with good tread. \nDistance: 6 miles (or more depending on what you decide) \nElevation Gain: 1000′ \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate \nDogs: no \nRestrooms: no \nWater Fountain: No \nTrail: Out and back \nSunset: 7:00pm please bring a light or charged phone as it will be dark on the way back.\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes can be on this trail so beware! Something else occasionally sighted here depending on the time of year are wandering steers since the trail is in a ranching area. Slip-‘n-fall is always possible so please wear good shoes or use poles if you wish to\, poison oak may also be on the trail so watch what you brush up against. \nBring: \n\nPlease bring at minimum a water bottle of at least a liter\, a mistake beginners often make is thinking it is cool or easier so they do not need much water. I would rather carry it and not need it than not have it.\nAn optional snack if you think you need one for when we take a little break at the mine or at our halfway turn around point.\nFlashlight/headlamp\nHat or sunglasses if you feel you need them since we start in daylight\nAn extra layer to put on and off\, when you stop it can get chilly!\n\nThis hike will be cancelled: if it is excessively hot\, windy\, rainy or if less than 2 people besides myself are signed up by the afternoon of the event. \nDriving directions and parking: 118 Yosemite offramp go toward the hills and turn right at Evening Sky\, trailhead on the left. DESCRIPTION:Help prepare for the upcoming swimsuit season with a hike up the Rocky Peak trail Sunday afternoon.\nPic is Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top. DESCRIPTION:5:45 PM START TIME – WEDNESDAY NIGHT – This might be the last time for this event before Kim resumes her weekly hike schedule 🙂\nI’ve been get too much couch time lately and need to get my tuckus moving\, so here we go… \nThis is kind of my “go to” hike\, it’s on my way home\, it’s not too long and the views can be spectacular! \nThis is a great weeknight hike\, not too hard nor too easy – I would say it’s “Just Right”! \nAlthough not a true beginner’s hike\, the gain is spread out evenly over the whole climb which makes it fall on the easier end of the intermediate scale (while still being a good workout). There is a great picnic table at the top which makes it perfect place to do a little socializing during these crazy times! . We will try to limit this time to about 15-20 minutes max. so we can get back down at a decent hour (I’m shooting for around 7:30ish)\, so I can grab some afterward…it is during of the week after all! \nIt can also get a bit chilly up there\, even during the warmest weather\, so if you get cold easily bring a jacket\, hat\, gloves\, blanket or other suitable warming device. \nDirections: From the 101 take the Ventu Park exit and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn…um…left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so let’s try to be somewhat restrained. DESCRIPTION:5:45 PM START TIME – WEDNESDAY NIGHT – No Rain This Week!!!\nI’ve been get too much couch time lately and need to get my tuckus moving\, so here we go… \nThis is kind of my “go to” hike\, it’s on my way home\, it’s not too long and the views can be spectacular! \nThis is a great weeknight hike\, not too hard nor too easy – I would say it’s “Just Right”! \nAlthough not a true beginner’s hike\, the gain is spread out evenly over the whole climb which makes it fall on the easier end of the intermediate scale (while still being a good workout). There is a great picnic table at the top which makes it perfect place to do a little socializing during these crazy times! . We will try to limit this time to about 15-20 minutes max. so we can get back down at a decent hour (I’m shooting for around 7:30ish)\, so I can grab some afterward…it is during of the week after all! \nIt can also get a bit chilly up there\, even during the warmest weather\, so if you get cold easily bring a jacket\, hat\, gloves\, blanket or other suitable warming device. \nDirections: From the 101 take the Ventu Park exit and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn…um…left. SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks and the Pacific Crest Trail
DESCRIPTION:Let’s burn off those Valentine Day chocolates on one of my favorite trails at Vasquez Rocks. This is a moderate 5-mile hike with an elevation gain of about 554’. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that best suits your needs. Also\, please review the disclaimer below. \nMeet me at the visitor center at 11:45-12:00. We will hang out at the center for about 20 minutes before starting. My estimated start time is 12:20. They have very nice exhibits and restrooms. If there are no parking spots available at the visitor’s center\, keep driving down to the dirt parking lots\, you’ll find more room there. \nFrom the visitor’s center we will make our way west and hike above the valley. We will have views of Vasquez Rocks from another perspective than what we typically see in photos. Eventually we’ll make our way to the junction and turn right onto the PCT trail. We’ll hike along the creek\, into the canyons and take a break at the caves (it’s pretty). Then we’ll continue through the wildlife tunnel (directly below Highway 14) and turn around. We won’t be able to walk through the tunnel if there’s too much water. \nOn our way back through the canyon\, we will turn right at the junction\, continue along the PCT\, make our way to the famous Vasquez rocks\, explore and possibly climb to the top. I will point out where Captain Kirk and the Gorn stood (a perfect spot for a group picture). SUMMARY:Placerita Canyon Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me at Placerita Canyon Nature Center for an afternoon hike on the Canyon Trail and then go further to the waterfall. There was water a few weeks ago when I hiked it last\, hard to say if the waterfall is still there as it has been warm and dry the past few weeks and water dries up fast.\nIt is a nice fairly shaded canyon that will be beautiful with flowers and probably some water crossings. We can also decide to turn around a little earlier as you do a little rock climb to get to where the waterfall would be. \n\nDistance: 5.1 miles or maybe a little less if we turn around at base of fall area.\nElevation Gain: about 500 ft\nDifficulty: easy intermediate: I go at a moderate pace only stopping briefly if needed and take a little longer break at the halfway waterfall point.\nDogs: Not preferable due to our pace and the climb to the waterfall\, but they are allowed at the park. We won’t wait for you for your dog’s pitstops.\nRestrooms/water: Yes at the nature center parking area\nParking: free lot but can be crowded\, may need to park a ways from the trail but it is a large lot. Allow time to get there and look at the nature center. DESCRIPTION:5:45 PM START TIME – WEDNESDAY NIGHT\nI’ve been get too much couch time lately and need to get my tuckus moving\, so here we go… \nThis is kind of my “go to” hike\, it’s on my way home\, it’s not too long and the views can be spectacular! \nThis is a great weeknight hike\, not too hard nor too easy – I would say it’s “Just Right”! \nAlthough not a true beginner’s hike\, the gain is spread out evenly over the whole climb which makes it fall on the easier end of the intermediate scale (while still being a good workout). There is a great picnic table at the top which makes it perfect place to do a little socializing during these crazy times! . We will try to limit this time to about 15-20 minutes max. so we can get back down at a decent hour (I’m shooting for around 7:30ish)\, so I can grab some 🌮🌮 afterward…it is during of the week after all! \nIt can also get a bit chilly up there\, even during the warmest weather\, so if you get cold easily bring a jacket\, hat\, gloves\, blanket or other suitable warming device. \nDirections: From the 101 take the Ventu Park exit and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn…um…left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so let’s try to be somewhat restrained. DESCRIPTION:This is a moderate 4-mile hike in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains\, with an elevation gain of 650’\, suitable for fit beginners. \nThe Hike\nMy hikes are slow paced (1.5-2 mph) and the end time is approximate only. We take breaks\, we explore\, and we don’t leave anyone behind. If this hike isn’t for you\, please find another that best suits your needs. \nMeet me at Falcon Park (see directions below) at 6:00\, with a start time at 6:05. \nThe hike loops around the Big Sky housing development. A portion of the hike follows the creek that runs through the neighborhood. Most of the elevation gain will be at the beginning\, however\, there are about nine additional inclines dotted throughout. SUMMARY:Sunday 4pm - Rocky Peak Sunset hike
DESCRIPTION:Beat the post holiday season doldrums with a hike up the Rocky Peak trail.\nPic is Sunset on the Rocky Peak trail Oct 2023. Thank you Teka\, \nWhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike in every Sunday afternoon for over 20 years\, and he’ll be leading this event as long as he keeps getting large annual hike-organizer pay raises. This hike always happens\, even when it rains\, snows\, hails\, or blows. The only exception is when it’s on fire (or Mark sprains his knee). \nThis is a fire road with great views of the valleys and scenic rock formations all along. It starts out steep\, moderates for a while with some flat spots\, undulates easily for a while\, then a final steady grade (but not too steep) to the lemonade stand at the top.
