About This Event

Today we'll be hiking to the Jim Morrison Cave. The Doors’ Jim Morrison frequented the cave to find solace from the everyday rock star life he lived out on Sunset Strip. A few of his lyrics can be found in the cave, the inside of which has also been completely painted over and sculpted by others.

There will also be a Bonus Hike. See below

This skull is said to be carved by him

We'll get there by way of one of the best segments of the Backbone Trail. This challenging and scenic hike along the Backbone Trail offers panoramic ocean, mountain and canyon views, attractive groves of oaks and interesting geology.

On the way to the caves we'll bag McCauley Peak (aka peak 2409). This is what I refer to as the "Fake Mesa Peak" since so many hiking groups believe this peak to be Mesa Peak. But those who Hike with Dean to the real Mesa Peak know better.

Depending on group and time we'll hike to Corral Canyon and play among the sandstone spires and fanciful outcroppings.

Hike will be a strenuous 8 miles out and back with some meandering. Some great rock climbing will be available for those so inclined, but optional. Total ascent will be about 2000 feet - net gain is about 1400 feet

At the finish of the hike we'll all yell: This is the end

Directions:

Free but limited parking on the southeast corner of Piuma Rd and Malibu Canyon/Las Virgenes. There is pay parking across the street and south.

If you do end up in the pay lot STAY THERE -- That is where the trailhead is. Those of us in the free lot will be walking your way.
